Succession - Season 4

https://www.distractify.com/p/all-the-bells-say-succession-meaning

Here's the poem fwiw:

There sat down, once, a thing on Henry’s heart / so heavy, if he had a hundred years / & more, & weeping, sleepless, in all them time / Henry could not make good. / Starts again always in Henry’s ears / the little cough somewhere, an odour, a chime. //

And there is another thing he has in mind / like a grave Sienese face a thousand years / would fail to blur the still profiled reproach of. Ghastly, / with open eyes, he attends, blind. / All the bells say: too late. This is not for tears; / thinking. //

But never did Henry, as he thought he did, / end anyone and hacks her body up / and hide the pieces, where they may be found. / He knows: he went over everyone, & nobody’s missing. / Often he reckons, in the dawn, them up. / Nobody is ever missing. //

Maybe "Too late" -- but he's already used This is Not for Tears and All the Bells Say, which surround that. So maybe, if one of the kids really does betray everyone else, "And hide the pieces, where they may be found." Or maybe "In the Dawn."

it's Berryman not Whitman

Aargh, yes, my fault, I am an idiot! But I did like the episode suggestions of the other poster following from this poem thing.

Too right.

Agreed. Greg is no longer Greg.

Yes, they changed him completely and his lines are awful.

He’s a problem in real life….

Actor Nicholas Braun of HBO’s hit series Succession is facing multiple accusations of sexual abuse from a vast number of women, some of whom were minors at the time of the alleged interactions.

That’s news to me and so disappointing! I greatly enjoyed Cousin Greg until this season and was looking forward to seeing where the actor would go from here. Oh well.

Wonder if that’s part of the reason his lines/storylines have been so weird this season? If, even not consciously, the writers feel different about the actor and it’s affecting the writing.

(Pp above: just to clarify that “Oh well” was “oh well, now I don’t like him” and not “oh well, sometimes people abuse minors”!)

Like they made a point of showing her taking drinks and tossing her head back. Curious if people thought was really drinking or making it look like she was, and if she was drinking, if that has any bearing on her feelings about her pregnancy. I'm not sure what to make of it.

I thought it was interesting in the scene with Matsson when offers her the cocaine and she acts interested but then the conversation shifts and she never has any. It made me think if she was just skillfully making it look like she was partaking in alcohol/drugs by holding alcohol, saying yes to things offered, even appearing to take sips of things, but actually managing to avoid it somehow. I think that would be pretty hard in that environment but Shiv was doing a good job generally of playing it cool when her brothers, Tom, and the grays were not doing such a good job. Maybe she's just better at this stuff because of the time she spent in politics and outside of Waystar. She's less of a bubble baby than most of them are.

I don't have a read and I don't want to go down a total rabbit hole, but it was noticeable. And one reason I say that is because on the boat for Kendall's wedding Shiv refuses champagne and asks for water, which seemed odd. And that was before we knew she was pregnant. I predicted a pregnancy for her in this last season so I admit my radar might be up more than normal.

I almost wonder if Shiv is still pregnant? She's really the least maternal person, like ever. I refuse to believe she just oops! got pregnant, but maybe it was before Tom betrayed her.

DP. When did Tom get Shiv pregnant? It's not at all clear to me when they were "together" last - but it seems like they've been separated/estranged for quite awhile.

Maybe that's why she's now asking Tom to dinner...gonna bang him and make him think it is his.

Are we sure Shiv is actually pregnant? Couldn’t there be a surrogate? All we know is the results of “the tests” (not “your tests”). The language was ambiguous.

She wasn't abstaining from wine and coke because her surrogate is pregnant, pretty sure.

PP can you provide a source? Google isn’t showing anything.

It was probably removed because all it is are unsubstantiated rumors. I'm not about to condemn someone without more than that.

I'm googling that and finding nothing.

I thought this episode was boring. Anyone else?

I keep seeing comments like this in this thread and I get it because it's how my DH feels. He spends most episodes scrolling his phone and just checks in occasionally and is super bored by the corporate machinations and only mildly interested in the family drama. He likes the jokes, so he enjoys the shenanigans between Greg and Tom, Roman's witticisms, and the occasional cringe moment (usually Kendall).

But I like the show for the relationships between all these broken, immature people. They behave like children, and it's partly because they are petty, entitled freaks, but it's also partly because they carry around these deep psychic wounds from messed up childhoods and family dysfunction. I find it relatable and sad and embarrassing.

So to me this episode was fascinating, especially watching Roman and Kendall just petulantly acting out in their grief with pretty much no self-awareness and no one who is able to tell them to stop. I thought it was interesting to watch Shiv doing a better job of keeping it together, partly because she's scheduling time for her to cry in a dark room, and maybe partly because she's realizing that when she becomes a mother, she can no longer be a child.

But yeah, my DH was bored. It's not for everyone. It's not just amusing entertainment, it's something else, and I think if you don't connect to it on an emotional level, maybe it seems boring.

I mean I’m not bored by the whole show. I don’t scroll my phone and wait for funny quips. I just found this episode to drag on. Keep your condescension to yourself.

It dragged a bit more than the usual frenetic pace but Kendall, oh Kendall. He's so dopey and just has no.one. to reel him in. It was like his cringey birthday party and his L-to-the-OG performance.

This episode is a stark reminder that there are a lot of people in the world just making shit up and people lining up to buy it.
