Ear piercing and swimming

My 10 yr old wants to get her ears pierced for her birthday. I’m fine with that, but I’m reading she is supposed to avoid swimming until the piercings are healed. She is on a swim team. Having her sit out for 6 weeks of healing wouldn’t be ok with the team. Would one week be long enough to heal and return to swimming?

There is likely enough chlorine in the water to take care of any bacteria. We did not worry about this when we got DDs ears pierced.

This would have never occurred to me. However, if you're worried, hit them with an alcohol swab when she gets out of the pool. I'm sure it will be just fine.

No, one week is not enough. The piercing artist we took my DD to said 6-8 weeks.

My daughter has been swimming year round since she was 8. She is now 13 and has 3 piercings in each ear. She has never stayed out of the water after they were done. One of the earrings got infected but that was about a year after she had it done. We took the earring out, cleaned the area, and applied neosporin for a few days and all was well.

I wouldn’t sweat it.

We haven’t had ears pierced for the same reason.

Waterproof tape. We did it in August, after summer swim ended but before her year round team started regular practice again for this very reason.

I think this is going to be our plan this summer. DD wants her ears pierced, but is never out of the pool long enough. If we can get in four weeks or so between summer and winter swim, then use waterproof tape for another 2-4 weeks, that seems to be our best bet.

A lot of swim teams break in august. Do it then.
