Experience gift for 80yo?

Anonymous
DH's stepfather is turning 80 in March. The family is not close (often boarding on barely politely civil), but 'nice' gifts are expected (and cause drama if not given). This is 2nd marriage for both DHs mom and stepfather so they combined two complete households and have EVERYTHING the could ever need or want, and then some, so I am trying to figure out an 'experience' gift. He is educated and well-read, but does not like to travel. His health can be iffy so I'm wary of giving him something that occurs on a specific date. I was thinking maybe some private behind-the-scenes tour of one of the museums or monuments but I'm not finding anything obvious online. Any ideas you folks out there have to help me keep the family peace? Thank you!

Enough with the experience gifts no one wants that you think you are being clever with. Call mom, ask for the favorite restaurant and get a gift certificate to that.

Speak for yourself, PP. I love getting experiences as gifts.

What about go-karting? It's on a track so you can't get hurt driving, you feel like you're going really fast, you could rent out the whole place for just family. He'd just need help getting in and out.

Yes, I’d do a restaurant and make a date to go together. Then the experience is spending time enjoying a lovely meal together.

Or, maybe something like an Audible subscription to listen to books, or a kindle if he doesn’t already have one. Kindles are great for the elderly because you can make the font whatever size you want.

I agree with restaurant, or a nice food gift. A lot of older people are sick of cooking and/or can't cook anymore.

Magazine subscription for whatever his interests are.

Older folks still like getting something in the mail, turning paper pages and looking at nice glossy photos up close.

Agree. Favorite restaurant or someplace new or extravagant that serves the kind of food he likes. End of story.

Marcel's gift certificate and Kennedy Center tickets. Talk to him or his wife to pick out a show. Marcel's will put them in a black car to drive them to the show and then take them back to the restaurant for dessert.
