So my doctor just called w/ my 20 week ultrasound results and informed me that I have a 2-inch cyst on my ovary. I'm freaked out! He said not to worry and that we'll do another u/s in a month to make sure it doesn't get bigger, but I'm still worried. What if it ruptures? What if I need it taken out? I have my monthly appointment on Wed so I will ask more questions then, but in the meantime I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I've never had a cyst before.

At an 8 week ultrasound I had a 5 cm cyst (which I think is about 2 inches, possibly more). I was told they are common. Is it a corpus luteum cyst? I have another ultrasound next week for my nuchal screening, I imagine they'll check on the size of the cyst again.
From the research I read online, if a doctor needed to drain it/remove it, its safe to do once you are in the second trimester. The ultrasound guy also told me that if I was experiencing any significant pain on that side of my body it could be the cyst rupturing. Anyway, my doctor never even called me with the news about the cyst from my 8 week sonogram...so I assume its no big deal. |
My mom was 7 months pregnant with her second when she had to have her whole right ovary removed (this was in 1965). No problem whatsoever. She went on to have four more kids! |
I had a corpus luteum cyst during my first pregnancy. It went away on its own. I've also had other cysts which were discovered while I was on Clomid. They actually discovered the cysts because of pain that I had that was finally attributed to a ruptured cyst. They monitored the remaining cysts for about 7 months. They were hoping they would go away (which most do), but they never shrunk (I think they did get bigger -- I had multiple ones the size of tangerines), so they ended up doing laproscopic surgery to remove the cysts.
Best of luck! |
At 20 weeks or so (at time of first u/s) I had a 13cm cyst on my ovary. I stalled, had another u/s to see if it had gone down - it did not. The perinatalogist recommended removal, if I refused I'd be a high risk pregnancy (likely to rupture as fetus grew). I had it removed around 22 wks. They took it very seriously. Sugery was NOT laparoscopic and I have a seven inch vertical scar. It was a difficult decision to make and I felt a lot of pressure to have the surgery. I had two opinions in favor of removal. I spoke to a third OB casually and he wasn't sure if he'd remove it. Good luck with things. |
I had the same thing - it showed up on my 8 week US. They did US every single time I went to the dr's office and the cyst was eventually a few inches in diameter.
I was told that if it stayed, I would need it removed, but I was told it was a laproscopic surgery through my bellybutton. THe cyst was gone by 20 weeks. They searched for any signs when I had my c-section and there was no trace of it. Good luck to you! |
I had an ovarian cyst diagnosed at the 12 week scan. My Ob told me that these were usual and it may well go away on its own. But if there were any signs of discomfort to go to Emergency. He said we would reassess around 20 weeks and if it was still there like the PP it would need to be removed. Of course 2 weeks later I ended up in Emergency. The cyst had twisted around my ovary and was causing immense pain. They ended up needed to remove the whole thing (ovary included) and like the PP it was not laparoscopic it was a caesar like line.
Bottom line was that if it was not removed it was likely that it would cause me to miscarry as my body would reject everything. I now have a healthy toddler and am pregnant again. So try not to worry. If it does have to be removed all will still be ok. Good luck and keeping fingers crossed for you. |
