It's always the little things that stress me out. We took my son to watch ice skating at the Kettler iceplex, and now he wants to skate. He 3.5 and wears a size 8 toddler shoe and the sign at the rental said they had youth 6s. I figured they were too big, but I know I've seen tiny kids skating. Can anyone out there translate shoe size into skate size (there was no one behind the desk or I would have asked)? Or can I just go and say his shoe size and they will give me the right skate?
Yes, I realized odds are I will pay for the skates and a full hour and he will want to go home immediately ![]() |
We took our 3.5-yr-old skating this weekend, and just asked for skates in his shoe size (10). They seemed to work fine. Be prepared to haul him around the rink the whole time, but have fun! |
In the toddler sizes, the ice skates are sized the same as street shoes. |
OP here. Thanks! I guess what I am confused is right now my son is in toddler size, but the skate sign says "youth" But given someone else took a young child, I'll give it a go....and plan to haul him around. |
By size 6, an older "youth" would actually be in adult shoe sizes. So they definitely meant the sing for a youth 6 to mean a child/toddler size 6. After kids get to size 13.5 (which my child did around age 6), they go to size 1, gradually making their way up to their adult sizes. |

They should know what to give you at Kettler. There is also a mat on the floor just to the left of the skate rental where you can measure yourself.
FYI - Learn to Skate classes there start this week/weekend. They have a parent/child one called Mom/Dad/Me on the 2nd page of the brochure link below. 3.5 is a good age for that class. It might be less frustrating than trying to go on your own. http://www.kettlercapitalsiceplex.com/images/LTS%20Jan-March%202010.pdf |
We just finished mom and me at Kettler and it was great (3.5 years old). My son wants to skate all the time so a blessing in disguise. |
