Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
Around 3 months, our infant was babling a lot, "ah goo" and such at us and her toys. Now at 4 months, she mostly whines or doesn't say much. She still doesn't laught either although she smiles a lot. Granted, she has discovered her thumb and finds it most interesting and tasty, but is it possible to regress in speech? we talk to her a lot and she has great eye contact etc. I plan to bring it up at our well visit in a few weeks. Any thoughts?
Probably perfectly normal--I noticed as our son learned new skills, he stopped doing his old skills and the old skills later returned once he mastered the new skill. Maybe she's working on sitting up.

4 months?? All babies and children go in/out of stages. I definitely wouldn't worry at 4 months. In fact, isn't 4 months very early for babbling? Mine definitely did more whining than babbling at that age. If you're worried about that little insignificant thing, then there is many more silly worrying to come....
I remember I went to a playdate where a mother was saying she was sending her 12 month old to a speech therapist because the 12 month old wasn't talking yet. I was pretty much flabbergasted. What a waste of health-care money... All children progress at different stages; and most children may have slight periods where they may temporarily regress, but that generally doesn't affect their advancement in life. My brother-in-law didn't start talking until he was 3. Now he has his Master's degree and is one of the smartest of the 4 siblings. BTW - a few years ago, over the summer, my 2.5 year old started stuttering when we came home from a beach vacation. I was worried, but it ended within a few weeks. I researched and learned changes in environment or other small factors can temporarily affect this. No biggie. |
OP here. DD is obsessed with standing up and sitting up. I can't even hold her anymore because she wants to stand up! Hopefully that is it, I loved the little noises she used to make.
op, we're in the exact same situation. i figure she'll restart sometime but has new things she's into (incl. blowing raspberries, though now she seems to have moved on from those too).
My 5 month old went through a similar phase (can it be a phase when it lasts less than a week?!) and is now babbling endlessly. The cute noises will come back and just get better!
Our four-month-old was babbling and gurgling like crazy, right up until she started daycare and we went on a trip for a week for Thanksgiving. Came back and she'd totally stopped. It freaked me out, but I'm happy to say she's now blabbing away again.
OP here. THanks for the responses everyone, I feel better. Interestingly, the cute babbling did stop around when she started daycare in mid Dec.
