Inside the Jefferson Cup’s acceptance and division placement process

Anonymous
Although the tournament has now expanded to four weekends in order to meet massive demand, the Jefferson Cup Selection Committee still faces hundreds of challenging decisions annually throughout the acceptance process. Even with more than 1,600 total slots for this year’s event across the U10-U19 Girls and Boys age groups, the Selection Committee still had to decline over 700 teams that applied. Even among accepted teams, determining the division placement in each age group is another long and challenging process for the Selection Committee.

Interesting article on how Jeff cup selects and places teams. Would be interesting to know more about the teams that do not make it- like are there more teams in the lower age vs higher age who do not make the cut, boys vs girls, etc.

id love to see how many teams they actually turn down. any group beyond the third brackets is not quality soccer.

DD's big club team that has played in Jeff Cup for many years is on the wait list this year. They played bad in it last year and dropped in gotsoccer points, so I'm assuming those are the reasons.

The top brackets are pretty big. Once you get out of the top bracket you are no longer looking at the top teams.

So they say

This year we had over 2,300 applicants, and we have about 1,600 that will participate

No idea if that is girls or boys or the age groups. About a 70% acceptance rate overall. I think the u10, u18 and u19 groups are lite. So those groups may be easier to get in.

But's it's their JOB! Their massive money making JOB. Jeff Cup has been around long enough to have this figured out.

I like bigger tournaments where every team has a shot, even if it means a play-in group stage of shorter games the first day.

How did you find out about the wait list? Did your club let you know?

I ask because Jeff Cup is on my DS's team plan, but looking at the accepted teams, I don't see their team. Which honestly is fine with me, the only reason I'd want to trudge to yet another tournament and spent travel money is because a college coach said he planned to come watch DS play in it. That'll suck for DS to miss that.

All of the brackets for this year are out. If you don't see your kid's team listed, they didn't get accepted.

DD's manager checked with Jeff Cup. If other on age teams or older got in from your club, then ask to guest play with them at Jeff Cup. If you can't get to play in front of a college your DS wants to play at, then you will have to go to their ID camp.
