Viral challenge spreading on #TikTok and it's causing damage to local schools.
@AnnaMeiler has the serious warning from firefighters about possible electrocution and fires. #WBZ @wbz Massachusetts Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey issued a letter to all of the state’s fire chiefs on Monday warning of a viral TikTok video that’s inciting dangerous copycat behavior among teens. Ostroskey said in the memo that his office has already received reports of two instances of teens trying to recreate a stunt that involves partially inserting a cell phone charger into an outlet and then sliding a penny down the wall onto the plug’s exposed prongs. https://time.com/5769531/outlet-challenge/ The video can be found here: https://twitter.com/chrisWBZ/status/1219925377046458369 |
| Why are some kids so stupid? |
Because American schools do a crappy job teaching physics? |
I think this type of dumbassery was addressed in the Magic School Bus. |
Yes, that must be it. Blame their teachers. |
I think teaching "don't put foreign objects in an electrical outlet" is a parent's responsibility. |
| My son mentioned last night that they’re no longer allowed to use outlets to charge their phones because some kids burned out a few and I had no idea what he was talking about - PWC middle school |
| Idiots |
But now parents just get safety outlet covers so they don't bother teaching this point any more. |
| I remember when I was young, I was given the job of plugging in all of the Christmas candles in the windows. I got shocked once doing it and I'll never forget it. Lesson learned that you need to be careful. Maybe the PP is right that parents no longer teach kids to be careful since they just cover it up. |
| Is this one of those "viral" things that gets adults all worked up without any evidence that kids are actually doing it? Or have there been actual reported cases aside from the original videos? |
Physics? “Electrical sockets are dangerous and not a toy” is a lesson that PARENTS should be teaching their 2-year-old, along with not touching the stove and not running into the streets. Not the school’s job to teach every single basic life skill because you couldn’t be bothered. |
| In the old days, before my parents had outlet covers, I learned the hard way. |
Don't be an ass. You know damn well everyone does both. This is 100 on these kids for being idiots |
This. |
