State Cup tournaments

Would appreciate learning the differences between the two State Cup tournaments played in Virginia: (1) VYSA, which runs in the fall and (2) NPL, which runs in the spring.

I "get" VYSA feeds into USYS and USYS feeds into U.S. Soccer.

I also "get" VPSL feeds into NPL, which feeds into US Club Soccer.

All this aside, is one tournament more prestigious than the other? If so, why?

Thanks!

the fact that no one but NPL teams do the state cup should say everything about it.

In the end doesn't matter is what everyone will say because after U13 all top players will be in DA so why its a second tier tournament after that

USYS does not feed into US Soccer. USYS is the end of that pathway. Neither is really prestigious.

State Cup feeds into Region 1 tournament which feeds Nationals but that is all under the USYS umbrella. The USYS pyramid is older and nationals was the pinnacle back in the day when teams had to earn their place. Now with DA and ECNL not part of that structure and teams placed by politics and connections rather than merit now there are multiple teams who will never play each other all claiming to be national champions. NPL also has a parallel pyramid with regional and national competitions for leagues rostered through US Club instead of state associations. Whether one or the other is more prestigious depends on where you live.

USYS national league also recruits from the four regional tournaments so winning state cup is the first step to qualifying for that competition.

Knew this was coming...yes, every single top player in VA will be in a DA. Every single "top" U13 player in NOVA will be in the 36 roster spots between Arlington and VDA. Arlington and VDA did not miss one top player. They got every single one of them! And because these two DA programs got the very best 36 players, the state cup is trash because there are no good players left in NOVA to play in it. See how stupid this sounds?

ECNL teams also do not participate in State Cup. So that is kids on 3 DA (including DCU because there are VA kids on DCU) as well as BRYC, McLean, and Loudoun.

All top teams, all not participating in State Cup.

USYS State Cup is a better and more established tournament. My kids team won USYS one year (u12) and NPL (u13) the next. USYS was much tougher. To some of the other posters points, once you get to u14 it loses any luster it may have had as teams start to break up and ECNL and DA grab most (not all) of the top players.
