| Can anyone, please, clue me in? I only know that it's not mandatory but helpful. Thanks! |

Here's the info we were sent last year by the magnet coordinator after accepting the Eastern invitation:
"The Summer Media Institute (SMI) is a week long summer camp offered to 6th graders joining the Humanities program. This optional camp is a great way for students to meet new classmates, get to know the building, meet a few teachers, and be introduced to the media technology used in the Humanities program. There will be either four or five summer sessions offered. Dates have not yet been approved or set. Each day class will run from 8:30am – 12:30pm Once this program has been approved by MCPS for summer 2019 I will share all details and registration information. Unfortunately, MCPS transportation is NOT provided. You should expect to hear more about the SMI in late April or early May." It was a great experience for my kid. They worked in small groups (3 students) to write, film, and edit a short movie trailer. Great chance to get comfortable with Eastern, get excited about media, and meet other students. |
Thank you so much!! Do you happen to remember what week that was - late June, July, or right before school started? |
There were several weeks to choose from, so you can pick the one that fits best. |
| There was a cost for the program, and transportation is not provided. Only a 1/2 day program, but our kid liked it. They get to use the equipment, get to know the building, and meet some of the other kids who will be going into the magnet. |
| The cost was $165 and there were sessions ranging from June to early August, I believe. |
| Is there an analogous summer camp in TPMS? I think it's a great way to kick off a brand new life. |
No- nothing similar at TPMS |
| It's only half day. You have to be able to drop-off and pickup your kids in the middle of the day. It's a great social opportunity to know some kids before going to the school. And their final product is surprisingly good. |
| If you can swing it, definitely do it! Both my Eastern Humanities kids did it and loved it. Both times I was able to find a carpool to help ease the pain in the butt factor. Email Mr. Kerwin -- he sent out a spreadsheet of parent info for each session so we could find our own carpools. |
Thanks!! |
| It was a good warm-up experience with the school. The media teachers run the program, and it is an opportunity to meet some of the students and work on a group project. My daughter did not like the idea of summer school but really enjoyed making the movie trailer in the end. It didn’t help that I called it “The institute,” sounding straight out of Mr. Benedict’s Society. |
| You also meet some of the older kids who are in the program, who volunteer to help out. It’s really a good at to start getting familiar with the media software and equipment and meet some people. I would definitely sign your kid up if you are able. The summer homework packet might be harder to complete if you don’t go, too. |
