Expectant and Postpartum Moms
| For you experienced mommies out there, how much weight did you lose during the first 2-4 weeks after giving birth? |
|
Maybe 10? A lot of it is water which you lose very fast. You still have that squishy pregnancy look afterward. I gained about 30 lbs with both pregnancies and lost about half of it by my six week pp appt. The other half took about 9 months to come off. I lost no weight in my first six months of breastfeeding and then I lost tons in the next three months.

By 4 weeks, about 15 or so. BUt it depends on how much you gained to begin with, and how big/tall you are. But the funny thing was that after giving birth to a 8 lb baby, 24 hrs later I hadn't lost any weight. I remember being shocked, and wondering how that was even possible.
|
| Are you kidding me? Not OP, but I assumed you lost about 15 lbs during childbirth! Between the baby and the placenta and amniotic fluid and whatever the heck else comes out of you -- I honestly thought everyone went home from the hospital AT LEAST 10 lbs lighter! Yikes! |
|
If they pump you full of fluids at the hospital it can take a few days to pee and sweat off the pounds of water weight, so I believe 21:18's post. Between the antibiotics, pitocin and epidural IVs, I gained a LOT of water weight during my 3 days of labor. I looked like the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters by the time I finally pushed out the baby. I didn't go NEAR any scales until my ankles were back to normal...about a week. I also didn't have many pictures taken of myself for a week...just the baby. No need to remember how puffy I was unless I need extra reminders to avoid the meds next time (I tried to avoid them this time, but my water broke early and my contractions weren't going anywhere for days).
So, give yourself a week to pee and sweat off the water before you calculate your weight retention. I'm still about 15 lbs heavy at 2 mo postpartum, but it is slowly dropping now that I'm more active and bf'ing. |
| i gained 41 and lost 23 in the first 2 weeks. all but the last 5 came off over the next 6-9 months without exercise, just bf. still had 3 to go when i got pregnant a year later. |
|
I only gained 23 pounds so I shed it pretty quickly. My uterus was very quick to constrict again so I left the hospital not looking like the typical "4 month pregnant" look.
I thought gaining no more than 30lbs during preg. was healthy, but reading some of the other threads it seems like a lot of women gain A LOT of weight. So it will depend on how much weight you gain. |
| I gained 40-45 lb; and about 10lb in the first tri before I ever saw a doc, so I'm not super sure of my weight before I was pregnant. I was in prepregnancy pants by 10 days postpartum & at my 6 week appointment I weighed the same as my 8 week prenatal. |
| I've had 2 pregnancies and both times lost around 10 leaving hospital and 15 2-4 weeks later. That last bit takes a few months at least. |
| I gained around 25 lbs by 39. A lot of it must have been water since I lost all but maybe 2-3 pounds by the end of my first week post partum and I was eating normally, if not more than usual since I was nursing. To tell you the truth, I wasn't happy w/ the way I looked-- a little too skinny for someone who just had a baby. |
Yes, but it also depends on how tall you are (if you're 5'2"' 30 lbs is more in relation than if you're 5'10", obviously), as well as how much you weighed to begin with. And some people like to think they're "eating for two". Um, yes, but not for 2 elephants!

| I gained 30 lbs and had lost 25 by the time I got home... |
The "average" recommended weight gain is 25-35 pounds. But, as a PP pointed out, each woman is slightly different based on her height and starting weight (underweight women should gain more, overweight women should gain less). |
| I lost all of my pregnancy weight, about 20 pounds, within the first 2 weeks. I did not breastfeed. |
|
I gained 35 and lost 20 of it within 4 weeks. The other 15 came off slowly over the next 4 months.
(By the way, I did feel pretty big when I came home from the hospital. LOTS of fluids still hanging around from delivery.) |
