Are we driving a beater car? Does it place a shadow on MS DD?

We have a 10 year old Toyota Camry, low mileage runs fine, looks terrible b/c when we lived in apartment garage parking resulted in dozens on dings and scrapes which we cover with touch up paint.
DD is in MS, and we live in a tony inside beltway neighborhood ($1M homes standard) and at car pickup we are in the oldest most beat up car by far. DH says kids these days don’t care about cars and no one cares as long as car is clean for carpool is he right? |

+1 Sounds like you are concerned about appearances and trying to use your DD as a scapegoat, OP. Nobody cares about your car. And in this area, "$1M homes standard" areas aren't the tony neighborhoods. I do not believe that yours is the oldest/most beatup car by far. You live in a decent, middle-of-the-road part of town and Toyota Camrys are about the most decent, middle-of-the-road care imaginable. |

Hey, I've learned that too! Only the nouveau riche have new cars! Actually another thing I've learned on DCUM is that a neighborhood with million-dollar houses is just a regular old decent middle-of-the-road neighborhood. |

| OP, we have old cars so I get it. As long as they don't look like they've been in accidents, where the safety of your driving would be questioned. In Va a new Safety Inspection sticker on the dashboard once a year is required so it's known all is in working order. Don't know if Md has the same. Lots of people in snowy areas own a Snow Queen they call it. A beater car for driving in the winter months - salt on the roads and greater likelihood of mishaps. The nicer car is left in the garage. |

Maryland does not require an annual state inspection and if you've kept up with the news, Virginia may not much longer either. The OP is worried about her daughter being embarrassed being picked up in a 10 year old car, not an unsafe car. |

| Growing up I had my share of rich friends but that didn't affect the way I look at my own (frugal) parents and other friends' families. Now that I'm financially independent, I'm starting to find out that those friends who families don't flaunt as much were in fact {multi}millionaires. |

 Broke people say this just to make themselves feel better. It's not true. All the verifiably wealthy people we know drive, at worst, brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee ($50K) or Volvo XC90 ($55K) or Tesla Model 3 ($60K) or Audi Q7 ($65K). They're wouldn't be caught dead in a decade old Toyota s***box worth less than 10 grand.
