For example, if you are buying a used Honda from a Honda dealership, do you still bring the car to a mechanic before buying?

Perhaps if the vehicle does not come “certified” or w/a warranty.
However I desperately needed a new, used car about two yrs. ago & bought one at a used Honda dealership (not one of those small, independent used car lots.) I paid ca$h for a used 2009 sedan w/like 80,000 miles on it. It wasn’t certified & I didn’t purchase the optional warranty - And so far no mechanical issues. But I got lucky. In the future, I likely would if I wasn’t so desperate. And ALWAYS take to a mechanic if purchasing used from either a private party or independent dealership because you want to be sure the car has a CLEAN title, not a salvaged one. You want to be sure the car hasn’t been in any accidents prior. Good luck! |
Last four cars I bought were used from private parties. I did not and they all are fine. I just sold one of them and the buyer did not take it to a mechanic before buying it.
A new car--never. There are warranties in place to cover a new car. I would ask my mechanic his opinion between a few cars I would be considering.
I look it over myself. I know cars. If there's a problem, I'll spot it, or I'll find it on the test drive. But I'll know.
