Christian Louboutins

Anonymous
For my 30th birthday, my awesome husband wants to buy me a pair of Christian Louboutins. Do I go with a classic leather pump that is office appropriate (in black), or a really special pair that gets worn a few times a year? Or something in-between (like nude patent peep toes)? In general, I have a very classic style, and i'm trying to start upgrading my wardrobe to higher quality pieces, and these shoes will certainly help!

Given your stated preferences, I would go for a pair of black pumps. Just don't expect them to hold up well: I like the look (and have quite a few pairs) but must admit that they are much more flimsy than a nice pair of black pumps from Ferragamo, Gucci, or even Jimmy Choo.

op here - that's helpful to know - that they won't hold up well. Makes me think the "in between" might be the way to go?

For black pumps, would the other brands you suggested be better? I've been a Cole Haan gal previously.

PP here. Yes, for a classic black pump, I suggest looking at the brands I mentioned. For a more modern interpretation of the black pump, you may take a look at Tod's. I have three pairs of Tod's black pumps that I end up wearing most often to the office, since they are most comfortable. Chanel pumps are also quite nice, although they don't hold up well either, in my experience.

How shoes hold up depends upon the wearer and how they are treated. If you are downtown, expect more wear and tear due to sidewalks and grates.

I swear by Chanel and have some pairs for over 15 years and they still look almost new.
