Reflecting over the holidays,I've decided that our child just doesn't have time to practice and heart just isn't in it. How many weeks notice/payment would you give? We started this school year, not a long term relationship, but I don't know how much she depends on these lessons for income, so I want to be as fair as possible.

I gave our in-home music teacher a month's pay in lieu of notice. We really didn't want her back.
And I based this on a) common curtesy and the standard time required by the official music schools like International School of Music or Levine. When you sign their contracts they require a month's notice. You can pay and attend or pay and not attend. |
Agree, one month.
You don't have to give notice beyond a week. "This Thursday will be Stefania's last piano lesson."
We paid our private music teacher monthly so I finished out the month before stopping. But I let her know at the beginning of the month that we would be ending lessons.
I would give the teacher 2 weeks of pay, but the stopping would be immediate. Some teachers don't take the news well. Don't subject your kid to that.
