33 Weeks and Baby is still in breech position - When did your baby flip?

Anonymous
I have an ultrasound done weekly due to a two-vessel cord making my pregnancy high risk. So far, so good, he is growing and doing really well. However, every time we go in for an ultrasound, they always make it a point and seem shocked he is still in breech position. I would like to have a vaginal birth, but each day that passes it looks like I will be having a C-section. As long as the baby is ok, I am fine with it, but I am getting a little nervous that this is abnormal. When did everyone's baby's flip so they were head down?

There's still time. My daughter didn't flip until some time between 34-35 weeks. When I found out that she was still breech at 32 weeks, I tried out some of the positions that you can find on the website spinningbabies.com. I don't know if that's what did the trick, but I figured that it couldn't hurt. If she wasn't head down at my 35 week appointment, I was planning on trying out acupuncture. I've heard some people have had success with that. Good luck!

A friend's baby didn't flip until 39 weeks (but the other way - was head down and then flipped to breech). SIL's baby didn't flip until 38 weeks. At 33 weeks, you still have some time, but if you really prefer vaginal birth, there may be things you can do to encourage the baby to flip. PP mentioned spinningbabies.com, which has some ideas about positioning exercises, you can also get a chiropractic adjustment and/or have Webster's technique done. Then there is the "version", but it might not be an option for you since you're already high risk.

Good luck!

DD was frank breech until about 34-35 weeks - you still have some time!

OP here. Looks like my little guy still has some time, but I will certainly be trying some of the suggestions from the website that was mentioned. Thanks for the help

Mine never flipped so I would be prepared for a c-section just in case! I decided not to try to turn her due to increased risks for cord prolasp etc. It was a hard decision but I am glad that I made it because when we did the c-section the dr could tell she never would have turned on her own. I will also say she was always breech (not one of these baby's that flipped back and forth) so that leads me to believe she wasn't meant to turn!

Mine flipped at 34 weeks, just a few days before my acupuncturist was going to start trying. If you want to go the acupuncture route, then you want to start trying by 34 weeks -- it's a lot easier to flip when they're a bit smaller.

Neither of mine flipped. I had 2 breech babies.

I'm at 38 weeks and the little guy is breech, and has been since at least 31 weeks. Anyway, at 31 weeks, the doctor was like "don't stress -- there's a 75% chance he'll flip." As the weeks went on though, the doc basically said since he always seemed to be in the exact same position, it seemed like that was where he planned on staying. I'd be very shocked if he flipped now, but who knows ...

FWIW, we didn't try the methods to try and get the baby to flip. My understanding is that while a lot of people who use them do get the baby to flip, since most babies flip anyway, it's hard to say that the flipping methods had anything to do w/ it. I also read that while studies do show that in Asia (blanking on the exact country) where acupunture has been practiced for centuries, there does seem to be an increased correlation with it getting babies to flip, but studies haven't shown that in the US, for whatever reason. Lastly, both my doctor and birth coach said that most babies that are breech just basically seem to prefer that position. So even if you do get them to flip, if they really want to be breech, they're just going to turn back.

I'm somewhat bummed about not having the delivery I'd planned on (took 6 weeks of natural childbirth classes), but now I'm at the point where I'm just trying to focus on the positive aspects of having a c-section. I've been told by many that this is just the first of many times where regardless of all of your best planning, your kid might have other ideas that carry the day.

My DD flipped at 38 weeks but she never really dropped.... so had c-section anyway after stalled induction.

DS was frank breech and never turned. I tried some of the exercises (rubbing acupressure points, inversions against the couch - which gave me headaches, playing music, shining lights), starting when I found out. Nothing worked. My midwife mentioned doing the manual version (physically turning the baby), but she wasn't enthusiastic and I decided I didn't want to force it. One of the L&D nurses later mentioned that he probably hadn't turned due to low levels of amniotic fluid in part of the uterus (c section was moved up a few days due to concerns about the amniotic fluid). The c section was uneventful, DS was perfectly healthy. Breech isn't "abnormal", it just requires a different approach. I think the key today is that most doctors aren't trained in how to vaginally deliver them, so in most practices you need to be prepared for the c section. Good luck!

One of my twins (Baby B the higher one) was breech almost right up to the day of delivery (37w5d) - I think we had an u/s at 36 weeks and she was still breech and then on the day of delivery she had flipped. Of course after my son was born, she went "walkabouts" and ended up being delivered breech in the end!
Good luck!

A friend of mine had a baby that was in proper position right up until the last hour. Then she flipped and had to do a C-section. I don't think there is any solid way to predict what will happen.

Never. Breech until my scheduled c-section.
