We will be doing a Baltic cruise with our extended family and have planned a two day tour in Russia that will involve a lot of walking. We have to bring my five year old because there are no baby sitters on the ship. I don’t think we can bring a full blown stroller with us but are there any similar types of iteMs we can bring that will make the walking easier like a fold up scooter? Let me know if anyone has suggestions! |
They can probably handle it, especially if you can take turns doing piggy back rides. |
get a lightweight small scooter like the lil kik. |
We used a freeloader child carrier for similar trip and same age- for kids up to 80 pounds and think under 50” |
Congratulations. You win for the first stupidest post of 2020. |
Thanks guys - my husband has back issues and honestly I am just not strong enough to carry her so don’t think piggy back rides or that back carrier will work. Going to look into the scooter and see if there is a foldable one, I think that could be a great option. |
We take my 4 year old’s micro mini scooter and helmet on city vacations. It isn’t foldable, but once assembled, there is a little button that holds a pin that lets you pop the handle off and put it flat in a suitcase. It’s light and fits in our carry-on. She can go miles on it. Practice braking and rules for as many weeks/months as possible before you go. We live by busy streets and intersections and always practice at home a ton before travel. If you live in a quiet area, you’ll want to go to a busy neighborhood so your kid can practice planning, turning, stopping, dismounting, etc in a realistic environment. You need to know that you can trust your kid with the scooter on the trip. Oh, and we always hold the scooter in one hand and our child’s hand in the other and all of us walk through street crossings. Curbs and ramps and moving cars are a bad combination even for a well-practiced little kid.
Good luck! The trip sounds amazing! |
Buy an umbrella stroller at Target. They are like $10-$20 and folded up very small. That is all my parents used when I was a kid and we used them when we visited family across the country. Easy to fold and store and don't have to check on airplanes. They are not the super comfy stoller complete with suspension but they might do the trick. A 5 year old might be a bit big for one, it depends on the size of the child. |
Cheap umbrella stroller or compact scooter seems like a good way to go. Maybe you could even have one shipped to your hotel in Russia, or buy one there and just leave it, if you don't want to travel with it. |
Just trying to think of what the Russians will think when they see you carrying your FIVE YEAR OLD on your back. Much less in a stroller. The essential issue here is that OP just needs to accept her child is only 5 and likely will not be able to do a full day of sight-seeing. That sounds miserable for all involved. I'd divide and conquer, and have one parent plan on taking her to a cafe or back to the boat when she gets tire. |
I seriously doubt the sidewalks will be in the condition to scoot. Plus traffic. It sounds like a bad idea. |
NP. Five year olds can walk, as much as OP can. |
This. Kid can walk, no reason why she can’t. |
+1 I was a die-hard stroller user (my kids were 17 months apart). By 5, they could handle all day walking with no issues whatsoever. |
My kid could easily handle several miles of daily walking by the time he was 5. Walking is a very natural thing and kids can handle it if you get them used to it. Just take regular breaks and bring candy and they will go all day. |
