DD has applied to 9 schools; has heard from 6 (Awaiting VT, W & M and Perdue).
Her interest area is Environmental Science from an Agricultural perspective. She wants to improve the environmental impact of Ag from both a pollution and carbon sequestration perspective. And as she researched the people at the schools, she discovered that the school she applied to because they had a trivially easy application with rolling admissions to mitigate anxiety actually has people that do exactly what she is interested in. And she reached out to the professors, and one suggested she can mentor her at the school and help her get research money. This is at a large state school in the mid-west. She is still unsure -- mostly what if she changes her mind. But, it has been quite a journey. |

Well, if it is a safety, perhaps she will get some $$$.
|
| And kudos to her for reaching out. |
|
You have a smart kid. She will do fine wherever she goes. Kudos.

She did. Cost is the same as our state school. Only down side is it is far, and we are worried about the distance and the winter. |
Might want to work on your spelling if she ends up a Boilermaker. Makes sense to go to the Midwest if she is interested in Ag. |
| UIUC? |
She was accepted there. Has not looked much into it (acceptance came last week vs. Sept. for the first school). |
| They tell the kids at our HS to love their safety - to great advice. |

One of mine did a safety. All the other schools she got into were higher ranked and better in many ways.
She did great. The only issue and it's kind of a big one was job placement after 4 years. She had a 3.9 Engineering. Their internship program was lacking as well. Yes, of course there were job offers, just not as good as the other places and companies did not come to the school she had to reach out. She made her way went back to the same school for Graduate School and has had an awesome career. We have no doubt her career would have been easier to start had she gone to another school, think MIT, Stanford. etc..Yes, I know it's hard to believe, but we let her choose her college She's always been the kind of kid that was motivated always had a part time job in school. not needed , but she wanted one. . |
Sierra has great prices on winter gear. Make the cross country drive once for initial move-in then planes the rest of the way. She will be fine. |
| My child also chose her safety (out of 7 admits). I think she felt it “fit” her best. I had my concerns, but kept them to myself. So far, she has done very well, and I am proud if her for having good judgement. |
| Would the environmental science and forestry school at Syracuse University be of interest? |
It sounds like you are talking about UMN. If you are, it is a great place but you are right about it being cold. There are plenty of flights. |
