I am an avid exerciser--5-6 days a week plus weights, but I have not been dieting. Still nursing but planning on weaning soon. It's been AWHILE (two kids) since I have done a diet--and that diet was a no carb diet--which worked, but was very strict. Anyone have a good diet plan to recommend for shedding 10-20 pounds over the course of four months? Not interested in Weight Watcher type programs--I can do a diet by myself, if it works I can self-motivate, I just need a plan to get me started.

| Sorry you aren't interested in Weight Watchers. I lost all 40 lbs of my baby weight in 5 months on that diet, and it was easy easy easy! |
| and some ideas if the baby weight is about 4-5 years old would be appreciated as well! |
| I second Weight Watchers. I lost 30 pounds in three months. If you are self motivated, you don't really need anything but the materials to do the plan, so it's not a big investment. And, it's a great tool to teach healthy lifestyle - or to get you back on track with a healthy lifestyle. |
| I lost 20 lbs. in 5 months using weight watchers as a general guideline and making sure to eat lots of protein and fiber. I workout pretty intensely 5-6 days a week. I have kept the weight off since June. I feel great. I think the key is to eat low cal, filling foods and build lean muscle. I have really seen an improvement in my metabolism. |
| I say try Men's Health ($20 for the whole year). I don't care for Women's Health, doesn't seem as serious, fitness wise, to me. Or the men's body building mags. Seems strange, I know, but these guys are serious about fat loss and keeping fat low and offer the best diet tips and exercises. 80% of how you look is what you are eating! Best of luck. |
| Check out Dr. Joel Fuhrman's Eat to Live. He prescribes a nutritionally dense eating style that is low calorie and unbelievably healthful. I've lost 23 pounds recently while lowering my total cholesterol to 132! |

What are the basic guidelines for WW--I see they have an online service but I don't really want to join any sort of group. Is there a book or something out there? |
| You may also want to think about mixing up your exercise routine. I know if I've been doing the same cardio or weight exercises for awhile, my body adapts and stops changing. I recommend Jillian Michael's 20 minute shred. |

WW works on a point system instead of a calorie system. Foods that are high in fiber and low in fat are less points than foods that are the same amount of calories but higher in fat and low to no fiber. Also, on WW, most vegetables are 0 points. The number of points you get in a day is dependent on your age, weight, height, and lifestyle/job (sedentary vs. active). You get extra points for exercising. When you join WW, you can buy the books that give you the point values of different foods and also a points calculator. I honestly can't recall how much I paid for them. Also, at the first meeting they tell you how to calculate the number of points you get on a daily basis. Then for each 10 pounds you lose, you drop a point of your daily total. Personally, I think the books are better than online because once you buy the books you have them forever whereas you only have access to online as long as you pay for it. Good luck. |
| OP, why not buy a book of calorie amounts for food, speak to a nutritionist once or twice to find a healthy calorie total a day, and go with that. It really is not rocket science and it sounds like the "plans" out there are not for you, interest-wise. |
| OP here. Thanks for the responses. |
| Do you have an iPhone? There is a great app called Lose It that simply helps you track calories consumed and your progress against your target. It's kind of a pain until you get used to it, but it really helped me understand how much I was actually consuming vs how much I should consume to lose weight. My goal was only 5 lbs, but I dropped them in no time. |
I'd go back to that. I had GD with my 2nd pregnancy (completely controlled with diet and walking), and after I delivered I still have no carb cravings. And I lost all of my weight (and more) by the time my son was 6 months old. That - in combination with your weights - should work again. And I do agree that mixing up exercise routines is the way to go. So invest in some exercise DVDs. This is a great place to review them - http://www.collagevideo.com/ |
