Where in MD can I get a good selection of liquor?

We just moved here, and the local liquor stores are mostly about beer and lottery with little selection. Am I missing something?

Virginia had those awesome superstores, like the one in McLean that sells every imaginable type of wine, etc.

Is there anything like this in Mongtomery County? We're in Wheaton, but will travel for good liquor.

In Montgomery County, you have to buy from a store run by the Department of Liquor Control.

Here's a link for their store locations:

You are best off heading into DC. MoCo has some terrible monopoly on liquor sales. Rodmans, not far over the county line, and Calvert and Woodley have great selections. I haven't bought booze in MoCo in all the years I have lived here.

OP here - Thanks for the link. See, I've been to some of those, and they really have no selection. I thought maybe there was a superstore somewhere that was run by the county.

I go to Corridor Wines in Laurel. Not very close, but great selection and helpful staff.

Thanks PP. Laurel might be an option.

I second this. good selection

Look for the ads in the Washington Post food section, they are the big stores, (in DC). Some in Georgetown, others elsewhere

Third this.

Also i.m. wine in Fulton / Maple Lawn is very good for wine, etc. They are a small shop and have accommodated numerous special orders for me in the past when I have done parties. http://www.imwine.com/

If you go there, stop at Ranazul for happy hour- their pitchers of sangria and apps are awesome.

Do you want hard liquor? That is only sold at retail by the county, but I have found the selection to be pretty good (for my limited needs).

If you want wine, that is wholesaled by the county, so the selection is not as great as DC (you could try Magruders or Paul's in Chevy Chase) or VA (total beverage) but there are ok stores, if you give us more location info.

I love going to Corridor in Laurel, but honestly, I don't think they have that great a selection of liquor. It's great for beer and wine. I think the White Oak and Cloverly MoCo stores have better liquor selections.

We like Rodman's (one location on Randolph Rd. and one in White Flint Plaza behind the mall) for beer and wine. I would assume the county liquor stores are pretty much the same

2 options for wine: McArthur Bassins wine in DC or Mills in Annapolis. Or the Totals like Laurel or McLean.

Morris Miller is just inside the DC border, right off Georgia Ave. For those of us in Takoma/SS, it's the best selection nearby. Not terribly convenient to Wheaton, but not terrible, particularly if you're headed that way for work. Ask "Shaday" (sp?) (young slim bald black guy) for wine advice -- he's really good.

It's not terribly convenient to you, but for a great liquor selection, nothing can beat Ace Beverage in DC (over near AU). If you are a cocktail lover, talk to Joe there and he will help you out....he curates a great selection of unusual/interesting liquors/bitters/mixers and it is worth a trip or call if you are looking for something out of the ordinary. They also have a reasonable wine and beer selection. I've heard good things about MacArthur but haven't been over there yet... I sadly have not needed to buy wine lately (pregnant and have too much around already).

For wine in DC Wine Specialist is good, and Calvert-Woodley/Rodman's/Cleveland Park all are useful. An occasional trip to Total in VA is sometimes worth it, too.
