Best kids cold medicine??

We have a trip we’re going on tomorrow and my kid Woke up today full of congestion, blowing, sneezing, coughing. I’m of course pushing fluids and rest today but I really need her to kick this quickly. She will be miserable flying with the pressure otherwise. I’m never one to give over the counter medicine but can you please recommend the absolute best fastest acting cold medicine for these symptoms please! She is 10 years old.
I know this forum will be faster than me doing the research myself, which I don’t have time for today with packing! Thank you so much.

Cancel or postpone the trip please. It would not be fair to your daughter or the other people on the plane with you to have her fly. I know it sucks, but please do the right thing for everybody.

You’re joking, right? Kids really can’t take cough/cold medicines like adults. Cancel your trip and stop being so selfish.

I’m not sure about traveling but I like Mucinex Kids multi-symptom Cold. I also give kids Sambucol syrup.

I’m not canceling an overseas trip to visit family we planned 6 months ago because my daughter has a cold. Please only respond with medicine recs.

I don’t think there is cold medicine for kids; they stopped recommending that when my oldest was little.

1. Call your pediatrician.

2. There is nothing that you can give her that is going to make the cold go away faster.

3. Benadryl will help with the congestion on the flight. Advil or tylenol if she has a headache (she is old enough to be able to tell you). Cough drops for a sore throat.

We use the kids cold medicine from Musinex (sp) for our 7 year old. They have cold, cold and cough, and one for fevers. Allergy medicine also helps to dry up his nose and reduce the nasal drip which causes his coughing. Our Pediatrician has told us to use the allergy meds when DS has a cold if the kids cold medicine doesn't take care of his nose and cough. There are also cough drop lollipops for kids.

Please don't fly if she has a fever, even if it goes down with medicine. She will be miserable and likely infect other folks.

Don't use the adult medicines, her body is not ready for them.

Any way you can get into a dr today to make sure it’s nothing bacterial? Good to at least try and rule hat out and get her on antibiotics asap. As for cold medicine, since she’s 10 I’d either call your ped or ask a pharmacist what is recommended. In the meantime Advil and fluids should help.

Kids Mucinex (or the generic expectorant). It's the only thing that is actually proven to help.

Have fun on your trip!

Thank you! I bought it and gave it to her and seems to be working already.

You absolutely can and should postpone your trip. Your poor child will be absolutely miserable on an overseas flight. And she might actually pop her eardrum. I feel bad for her. This is also a good lesson on why you shouldn’t take trips like this over winter break. Too much risk for illness at this time of year. Save it for summer.

everyone is so extreme on here. Have you never traveled, ever, with a cold? It’s not the flu. She may have some ear pain, but truly she will survive. Even if there is a minuscule chance her eardrum could burst which since this isn’t an ear infection, I doubt is likely - pediatricians only worry about this if you have an ACTIVE ear infection. And worst, worst case scenario her ear drum does burst, it’s very painful in that moment and then she will feel much better anyway. And it will heal. Obviously that all sounds horrible but you can’t make all your life decisions on the very unlikely scenarios or we would all just stay home always. M it’s a cold. I feel like people on here act like they never leave the house with a stuffy nose. This is an overseas trip to visit family, I would absolutely bring a preteen with a stuffy nose!

Have fun op! Hope she kicks it soon.
