Ames says Lukas was kicked out of “every school system” in Massachusetts before they moved to Maine.

In the days leading up to the murder, Ames says Lukas, who had also been kicked out of school in Maine, wanted to visit his two friends in Massachusetts but instead Kimberly decided to bring them to Maine.

“Kimberly did everything she could do,” she says. “If she hadn’t gone down to get Smith and Severance I don’t think this would have ever happened. You can’t blame her she was trying to do something. Lukas was isolated. He had nothing going on in his life.”

This reminds me of the couple of cases where teens killed their parents over not being allowed to date the person they wanted to date. I know people (especially on dcum!) will get caught up in the sensationalist fact of the marijuana, but that wasn’t the main problem going on here.

All three kids care from chaotic backgrounds. One of the boys had never met his father. The father was known. He was paying CS, so why had he never spent time with the child. And don’t give me any BS that the mom kept the dad away. The dad could have moved closer, maybe even the same neighborhood and established a relationship. Been involved at school.

Mom sounds just as nuts. You are arguing with a child over stealing YOUR weed? Not that he is smoking but that he took it from YOU. Then refused to drive the kids home? Chick, you bought them out here. What did you want the 13 year old to do to get home?

The visiting kids acted up (setting an illegal bonfire at her home). Their parents should have come to get them.

Not sure marijuana is a sensationalist element here. Agree it's just a symptom of the dysfunction in this situation and not the main problem.

There’s going to be a lot of blaming this particular mom, but she seemed the most responsible of the six parents who produced these three lovely children.

She wasn’t the mom injecting heroin and ODing in front of the one kid. She wasn’t the dad who had never even met his son although he clearly knew his child existed. She tried giving herself and her son a fresh start.

There but for the grace of God. This isn’t about marijuana. It is about mental health issues and lack of resources. Sounds like mom worked hard to find something. Her son was kicked out of every school and she moved to Maine to try to give him a fresh start. I can’t tell you how often I’ve seen desperate parents desperate to figure out something because no one knows where to direct them. Or if care is available they can’t afford it because insurance denies and there is no where else to turn.

Mom likely needed mental health services herself given the pot stash, wine, and prescriptions. Seems like she was self-medicating and really trying hard to build a life for herself. The dad only saw the boy EOW. I don’t know if that was but his choice, her choice, the boy’s choice (he was a teen), or logistics. But single parenting a child with behavior issues is really difficult.

The kids are animals and brutally murdered her. Yes, there is a back story for all of them but regardless of their upbringing, what they did is reprehensible. If it wasn't the mother, it would have eventually been someone else.

Yep. We’re lucky it wasn’t a mass shooting
