5 year old with one crusty eye

The subject pretty much says it all. It's not pink. It's not causing him any discomfort. But better to go to urgent care and get ointment today to stop it from getting worse?

I want to avoid urgent care to some extent because whatever my kid has is probably not as bad as the other germs brought in there.

Thoughts?

Just leave it. My doctor told me that in almost all cases pinkeye clears up without medication.

I would take him so I would know he was not contagious anymore 24 hours after starting meds.

JUst tell him not to touch anything and sanitize hands when you leave.

Take him and get some drops, especially if you plan on visiting (or having people visit you) during the holidays. He’s five - he will spread this.

Check to see if your healthcare has online consultations with a doctor. A friend got antibiotics for her daughter's pink eye on a Sunday. I had a rapidly spreading rash around a bug bite (infected) on a Saturday night and got antibiotics. Super convenient for an easily diagnosed problem.
