Hi All,
Over the past few months I have read this message board everyday and have learned so much from others that I wanted to take the time out to share my story with the hope it may help someone. My husband and I started our IVF journey by going to consultations here in the DMV area (CCRM, Shady Grove and Hopkins) and schedulded a conference call with Barbardos Fertility Centre; after careful consideration and prayer we decided to proceed with Barbardos due to factors such as paying out of pocket, their success rate and the fact that the protocol seemed more tailored to our specific case and not so cookie cutter. We did not have many medical issues beyond my husband having a vasectomy reversal and me being 39 with a history of fibroids which were treated via laproscopic myomectomy and my surgeon and the other Dr.'s telling us that that IVF would be our best chance and not to waste time with IUI.
The process with BFC was very easy, we scheduled an initial consultation, submitted the required medical information and records and waited for the Dr. consultation to be scheduled about a month later. We ended up consulting with Dr. Corona and she laid out the protocol for us and said we had a very good chance of success and sounded optimistic. The clinic itself is amazing in terms of response time and being organized, I have emailed my nurse and received a response within an hour most days. Once we decided to proceed we scheduled a baseline scan with Shady Grove and they sent the results to BFC who then provided us with our medications and where to purchase them online. Once the meds arrived we sent a picture to our nurse coordinator and she scheduled another call just to review administration of shots etc. and answer any questions. My protocol was the antagonist protocol and I started on birth control and then the hormone injections. We flew to Barbardos on October 31 and the day after we had our first scan with Dr. Skinner, not a technican, but the actual doctor which was great and unlike the clinics here in the US.Over the weekend we just relaxed at the beach and Monday we went back for another scan and confirmed that we would trigger the next day and retrieval soon after. The retrieval was very easy and painless, after the retrieval I went back to our villa and slept most of the day but was up at night and went out to eat. I started additional medications that night such as progesterone, estradiol, heparain and bromocriptine. We received daily calls from the clinic on the progress of our embroys and when it was all said and done we had 4 day 5 blasts; given my age we and the Dr decided to transfer 2 embryos. After the the transfer we relaxed on a sunset cruise as that was our last night and flew home to VA the next day. Upon my return home I took home pregnancy tests like crazy and they came back positive so I went to Shady Grove for my first HCG test and then proceeded to schedule the rest of my tests with my OB once it came back positive.
I just wanted to share because we had such a beautiful and great experience with BFC; especially when I compare going to Shady Grove for monitoring which was like being in a cattle call. It was so great to be on " vacation" for 2 weeks and not worry about making it to work on time or dealing with traffic for monitoring, I literally had 4 appointments over 2 weeks in Barbardos and was relaxed the whole time and I know it made a difference. For those folks who are paying out of pocket, even with meds, airfare/hotel/food we spent about $12K for 1 round and ended up freezing 2 embroys. I would highly recommend everyone at BFC and am so thankful we went with them and not a local clinic, it really was the best decision we made in this whole process. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have specific to BFC.
Today I'm happy to report that we just came from our 7 week ultrasound where we saw our baby and his heartbeat! As amazing as science is, this could not have happened without God's hand it in every step of the way. We had numerous friends and family who prayed and fasted for us and both my husband and I prayed about it together and individually. I know everyone going through this process is anxious and stressed and I cannot imagine going through it without having faith to hold on too knowing that God has our best interest at heart and He has a plan. The one verse I read and still read every day is Psalm 139:13-16- " For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mothers womb. I will give thanks to You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Science and doctors can only do what God allows them to do; He has the ultimate say in calling forth life.
Thanks and good luck to everyone!
