Yuck - dropped my 2 year old & 6 year old at a parents day out thing for one hour yesterday. There were only 5 other kids there. I just got a note that one of the other children has lice. Is there anything i should do now to prevent/stop it? Or what exactly should I be looking for this soon after exposure? My older kids go to a school w/ regular lice checks so we never get the notes I hear about with lice in the classroom so I’m clueless and paranoid! Thanks |
I’d buy a nit comb and regularly comb out their hair with conditioner |
I would buy the shampoo kit and do my kids’ hair. |
If they were exposed just yesterday, you may not be able to detect right away. Buy a lice comb, and every 3-4 days for the next 30 days, take a couple of swipes with the comb in wet hair, clean it on a tissue and check for nits. Behind the ears and at the nape of the neck are the best places to check (unless they have short haircuts where its very short there, then comb higher up on the head where the hair is longer).
They are really tiny little oval shapes that will show up as brown/gray on a tissue. I would only treat if I actually found lice. Its contagious and should be treated if found, but there is a good chance that if there was no head-to-head contact or hat/comb sharing that they didn't get it. |
The shampoo does nothing. Get the comb. |
I wouldn't do the shampoo unless you confirm one of your kids has lice (but then would treat both). I would get a good lice comb (i.e., not one of the cheap plastic ones from CVS) and do a full comb-out with conditioner on each kid to check for lice. I've used this comb through several infestations (unfortunately my kids seem to pick it up a couple of times a year) and it's excellent:
