Jimmy Carter?

Why the apology to Jews? Seems strange to me.
Is it because his grandson is in politics?

Can you give some more specifics?

Yawn. Jimmy Carter is so yesterday's news. He keeps trying to be relevant, poor dear.

You are so misinformed. Carter has more current influence than any other president on Middle East Affairs. He has the attention of every Israeli Prime Minister and he has the respect of the Palestinians and other ME nations. The Israelis don't always like what he says but they respect him enough to bring him to both public and private forums within Israel. The year he put out his last book on Israel he was also invited to the annual Security Conference in Herzliya to share the stage with Ehud Olmert.

Carter is often derided by Israel supporters here in the U.S. But the Israelis I know and worked with were much more accepting of his criticisms. If there is a poor dear, it is George W. Bush, who completely gave up on the peace process when he took office. He set the region back a decade.

He would have been better off not apologizing. It seems too waffly. He drops some points WRT credibility. The original statements were not all that outlandish, but the apology seems stranger.

He doesn't care how it looks to the public at large. His concern is to improve his relationship with the negotiating parties. They are the intended audience.

I'm sorry that he regrets using "apartheid" in the title of his book. I thought it took enormous courage at the time. There are elements of Israeli policy towards Palestinians which are quite similar to South African apartheid. He was right.

On the other hand, there are Palestinian supporters who have engaged in anti-Semitism. As a Palestinian supporter myself, I try to call people on it. So I think it's a good think for Carter to address this issue and to make any apologies he thinks are necessary.

I don't think Carter did this because of his grandson. He strikes me as someone who now feels free to do what he thinks is right these days and who takes principled stands and feels that he must make them public.

As a rule I don't think one should comment on typos, which I assume "good think" was. However, "good think" is a rather nice description of Carter's approach -- he gives it a good think!

If it was intentional, you have my compliments.

Nope! Completely unintentional!
