Fantastic for a woman who wants to study in NYC. It is extremely (think 10% acceptance rate) competitive to get into. Amazing poli sci, art history, dance programs. Really upping its game in the sciences too. Very urban but the neighborhood is mellower than NYU.

Backdoor into Columbia.

Excellent school. Full access to the resources across the street with a faculty dedicated to liberal arts instruction.

Columbia College alumnus here. Barnard is a great college choice and it is not a back door or second fiddle to Columbia College at all. While Barnard graduates have always received a Columbia University diploma, it is a separate institution with its own dorms, curriculum, trustees, faculty, endowment, and culture. Its students have the advantages of a women's college with the option to pick and choose from what the larger university has to offer. Barnard students have full access to the extracurricular activities, research opportunities, and courses across Broadway.

Thanks to this post, my brain will forever see "Barnyard" rather than Barnard.

+1 Columbia College Alumna here. At least in my day, Barnard language courses were considered better. It was wonderful to have so much variety of perspectives and teaching styles. And as the person above remarked, students at both colleges have full access to the extracurricular activities. I was involved with a Barnard theater group, along with a number of other young men and women from the college.

I had two friends attend. One was a closeted lesbian who struggled and eventually came out. The other was not, but noted that there were many in that situation. However this was a few years ago and in less open times for the LBGTQ community.

Acceptance rate for Barnard is 16.7% - about the same as Georgetown.

That’s old data. Last year’s acceptance rate was 11.7 per their website: https://barnard.edu/news/barnard-welcomes-class-2023
