MCPS high school math- 12th grade

My oldest child is a Sophomore in honors precalc and struggling for the first time in math. I assume he will take Calc in 11th grade but what should he take in 12th?

I’d worry about getting him out of this course with a B first.

If you don't want another calc class (B/C), AP Statistics is an option. Otherwise, different schools have different courses.

I am focused on getting him through the current class. But would also like to know what he should take in 11th and 12th.

Are two years of Calculus standard?

Why would you take AB and BC calc?
Anonymous
I have heard that some do both because they are not ready for B/C in 11th Grade.

I think that’s a great idea Cal AB and then BC

Very common for students to move from honors pre calc to calc AB (jr year) and calc BC (sr year). Kids think that they NEED to go from honors precalc to BC but many, many do AB first.

what is the difference between AB and BC?

Yes, one year of Calc, either AB or BC. Then AP Stats.

BC includes all the units covered in AB and adds on two more.

There is also a course “Calc with Applications” that is not AP and can be taken before either AP course. My oldest struggled some in pre-calc and took AB followed by BC but knew other students who took Calc w/Apps followed by AP Calc or AP Stats. I have heard colleges prefer to see Calc senior year. My DC received AP credit but took Calc again this year in college, it has been her favorite class (she credits the teacher).

My youngest was doing very well in pre-Calc last year, especially by the end of the year, and went straight to BC. Day to day, it requires a lot of work, even with self-study over the summer. It’s going fine, but motivation and preparation are essential. This may be somewhat instructor dependent (our HS only has one for BC).

Does Calc with applications in 11th and AP Calc in 12th look bad for college admissions? What do students who are good at math and take Calc BC in 11th take in 12th?

Multivariable Calculus if their school offers it.
