One of the best things about Korean food is soluntang (sp?). It is a bone broth soup that is whitish and you add in course-grain sea salt and finely chopped scallions, as well as rice,at your table, and you eat it with kimchee. I remember when I lived in NYC there was a specialty restaurant in midtown that sold only this soup. I want to think, with NOVA's huge Korean population, that we'd have something like this here. Does anyone know of a place like this? |
Google around in Annandale and Rockville. |
Probably more places in Annandale than Rockville. There should be plenty OP. This is very common food in traditional Korean restaurant. Of course, you can also make it at home. Relatively easy soup to make. |
OP, you're looking for a place like Gammeeok from 32nd Street in NYC, right? The closest place we have here is Gom Ba Woo in Annandale: https://www.yelp.com/biz/gom-ba-woo-annandale. It's not as good as Gammeeok, but it's very solid and everything there has a homecooked feel. Make sure you try the steamed mandu too. |
Yechon, a Korean restaurant that has a ton of different Korean foods, has this soup for their lunch special. I think it's $8 or $9.
There is also a place in Silver Spring called Yett Gol that has this soup. This place specializes in this soup. |

It may be common Korean food, but I find that many Korean restaurants cater to westerners, so it's mostly Korean bbq. Not a lot of Korean restaurants actually serve oxtail soup. I just started making it at home. It's a long process, but my kids love it. This is the problem with K food, though... good food takes a while to prepare. It's why I don't cook a lot of K food. I don't know how my mother did it with four kids and working. |
You mom was not on DCUM probably. |
I went to this location when it first opened and it was terrible. The restaurant was empty and the soup was not fresh. I'm curious to hear if it's gotten better. The Centreville location is a different story though - very authentic and bustling with people. We'd definitely go there more often if we lived closer. |
She also didn't have a convenient restaurant close to her that made it nor the money to buy it. I do. I don't like to cook, so even if I did have a ton of time on my hands, I wouldn't cook most of the Korean food. She agrees with me because she also hated cooking. We now have Korean grocery stores that sell K food ready made. She even buys those. The only reason I cook oxtail soup is because I make a huge pot of it and freeze it. |

Thanks so much for the responses everyone! (...and, yes, it was Gammeeok on 32nd St)
