When to first call OB?

Anonymous
I got a BFP on Friday and now I am 16 DPO. Should I schedule an appointment with my OB or wait for it to "stick"? I am worried about a miscarriage and I don't know if there's an appropriate amount of time to wait before telling your OB. I assume most of his patients find out they're pregnant weeks after they miss their periods, not just two days after they miss it. Am I jumping the gun?

Thanks.

Call for an appointment, they may have you wait a few weeks to come in, but you can still make the appointment.
Congratulations!

Thanks! There are just so many thing I want to ask him. I am taking medications that I'm not sure I should be taking, and things like that.

Call and definitely mention the medication issue.

I am mostly worried about Xanax. I get panic attacks often and don't sleep easily. From what I've read online, I shouldn't be taking it, but I am so afraid to go off it.

call asap. ask them if you can come in for a blood test. if something happens, will be helpful to know what your HCG results were.

can you talk to the dr who prescribed the meds? or a psychiatrist? some drugs are okay; others aren't. but managing your mood is equally as important. I felt a lot better after seeing a psychiatrist who specialized in pregnancy issues - sometimes general internists don't know that much.

My OB doesn't schedule the first appt until 8 weeks.

call for the bloodwork. Those numbers are important to make sure the pregnancy is going well. For example, if you progesterone is low, some OBs will prescribe a supplement. You may not see the doctor, but the doctor will see your numbers.

Call OB for bloodwork asap, which we did to confirm pregnancy and check numbers. Discuss w/ OB weaning off xanax--this is v. important--and discuss with your prescribing physical as well. There has been another thread here recently about going off certain drugs--not sure it will help with panic attacks, but some have taken ambien for sleeping, and it is much safer. I personally am a big fan of meditation, exercise and biofeedback, which got me off depression and anxiety meds years ago. good luck!

Definitely call if only to discuss the medication issue.

You are too late! You should have called the OB before you got pregnant to ask for permission because you don't know enough about your body to know if it is a good time to be pregnant.

But since you didn't do that, yes call ASAP. This is an emergency, hello, you are pregnant! Though it's true they can't do much for you this early, it's important to go because it will make you feel better since women enjoy being terrified throughout every step of their pregnancy and rushing to the doctor makes them feel "responsible" oh and doctors love the revenue and some even enjoy the "control" they have.

(Snark aside, you should be proactive about your medication situation)

Enjoy your pregnancy!

And I'm not being sarcastic when I say be sure to pick up a copy of Expecting Trouble: What Expectant Parents Should Know About Prenatal Care in America and The Official Lamaze Guide: Giving Birth with Confidence.

There goes 30 seconds of my life I'll never get back. Thanks a lot.

Definitely call to see if they want to talk to you about the meds. I agree that talking to the prescribing physician is needed too.

But for your worries about MC, I think it is best to wait until 8 weeks or so to look for a heartbeat -- when they are most likely to see it. (Even then, call now to make your appointment) Not sure there is a whole lot they can do before that, other than to make you worry more. Unless you have a history of MC, and maybe, as pp suggests, they can augment your hormones.

I don't really know about "most people," but I would think a lot of women figure out they are pregnant about the same time as you... unless they are really irregular or totally clueless.

Thanks. This is the OP. I called today and they want me to come in on January 18. I will be 8w1d. I think the pregnancy so far is fine and I am gaining more confidence everyday. So far, my temps have stayed up and my tests are still positive, and no period. All good signs. Hopefully I will be able to see/heart the little heartbeat on January 18. Do you think I will be able to?

I don't have a history of m/c but I did have one c/p last year. Lost it about three days after my period was due. I was so afraid of that happening again.

OP ar they going to do a sonogram? That's not necessarily standard at 8 weeks. If they do, you should absolutely see the heartbeat, but without a sono, it is too early to hear the heartbeat with doppler.
