An AP/Honors B vs. A in regular courses?

Anonymous
DD just starting high school. Now, grades count. Enlighten me. Is it better if she gets "B" in her honors/AP classes (and struggles to get those) or "A" in regular classes? Does it really matter?

I honestly have no idea how colleges view these things anymore. There is so much confusing information on this. She isn't a rocket scientist and isn't a super test taker, so I am predicting she will get a decent SAT score, not one that is off the charts.

Thanks.

I think the “standard” answer is an honors B is better than an on level A but an on level A is better than an honors C. What matters most though is balance.

Well you should know the rubric - an AP class grade A gets 5.0 and an Honors class grade A gets a 4.0

So if your kid is getting B grades in AP classes, yes they are the same GPA as an A in an Honors class.

One is not really better than the other.

In MCPS an honors and an AP class are both weight out of 5

I’m pretty sure MCPS has always weighted honors and AP the same

Colleges like to see rigor, so I would say the AP grade of B is better than the on grade level A because the AP and honors classes show more rigor.

A C in AP is probably a 2 on the exam.

Always being probably last 10 years or within your living memory. Not mine. in the late 80s AP classes went up to 5 and Honors went up to 4
