My SIL daughter's daycare is using owlet sock for their infants. Is this an overkill? You can opt out, but she loves it. Is this the new normal? I don't think I've heard of this before. |
It’s not the new normal. |
Well, the technology is fairly recent. I don’t see how it would be a bad thing. |
I think that’s wonderful. |
what is it? |
It’s a monitor you can put on your baby to track their heart rate and oxygen levels while they sleep, and it will alert you if there’s a problem. Some parents find it gives them peace of mind, especially these days as SIDS risk is drilled into people. |
Not normal and not good. Devices like Owlet are not shown to prevent SIDS and are not recommended by the AAP. |
My concern would be that the daycare teachers are overly relying on the technology and thus will be less attentive to best practices when it comes to safe sleep. That is, of course, my personal issue with these technologies, and definitely a personal opinion/preference, not backed by any specific study or science, but just putting it out there. |
The flyer I got from my pediatrician and in my baby care class said specifically not to use them. |
I agree with this, I don't see why they need it if they are watching the kids. A pediatrician might not recommend it but it probably means in lieu of checking on your kids while you're awake. |
I think it's overkill, but I also know several new parents who would be thrilled by it |
Check with licensing may are NOT allowed to use any of these types of devices. |
