Expectant and Postpartum Moms
is there a correlation between how much weight you gain and how big your baby is? last time i gained ~60lbs but i had a 10lb baby. this time i'm a month away and barely over 25lbs and i'm wondering if this means it'll be a little gal.
First time I gained about 46 lbs and delivered a 9.4 lb. baby boy. Second time, three weeks ago, I gained about 26 lbs and delivered a 9.0 lb. baby girl. Both were c-sections one week earlier than due date.
Thats a good question! I haven't weighed myself, but I'm 16 weeks and showing! Will it be a big baby? Babies run large on DH side
I only gained 27 lbs and had a smallish baby -- just under 7 lbs. For me I think it was proportionate.
I read that there is a correlation between both first trimester weight gain and baby size and between total weight gain and baby size. Anyway, expecting my first so no experience to share but that's what I read ...
I gained 30 pounds and had a 9lb 1oz baby. Also gained very little weight my first trimester (maybe 2-3 pounds),
PP here with the 9 lb baby, also was very late to show and still didn't look that big at the end. People were shocked that I had a 9 lb baby (so was I!) I am pretty tall though and this was my first.
Gained 40 lbs and had a 7 lb 7 oz boy. Pretty typical weight gain and pretty average baby size. But that might be random too.
I gained 22 pounds with my first (probably down to 20 at the end since my stomach was so squashed I couldn't eat). Ended up having a 9lb 2oz baby. Gaining a similar amount of weight with this one, only I think I've put it on a bit faster this time around (14 pounds at 28 weeks) ... am hoping that I actually end up with a smaller baby!!! Both pregnancies I've only gained 2-3 lbs in the first tri. Last time I lost the weight within 7 days of delivering, obviously hoping that trend continues this time around.
Haven't delivered yet but I am past 40 w, gained 28 lbs so far and have had two recent ultrasounds putting me at a 8 1/2 lb baby right now--we'll see if it is true. Dh and I both surprised since we were both small babies (under 7 lbs) and I am not a big gal (5'2, 115 pre preg)....

I have a hard time believing there's a strong correlation. I mean, there are some particular conditions like GD that can affect both your weight and the baby's, and if you starve yourself to an extreme degree, that could also lead to low birthweight, but I think that for most standard singleton pregnancies the weight you gain has more to do with *your* body, metabolism, etc, than the baby.
I started out a little overweight (5'5", 158lbs), but have only gained 17 lbs as of 37w (5 of which in the first trimester), most likely because I've been walking like crazy and I think I've lost some me-weight while gaining baby-weight. Still, I was 8lbs4oz, husband was 9lbs10oz (his parents and sister were similar), and this baby has been measuring on the higher end of normal all pregnancy, so I doubt my low-ish weight gain is going to reverse this baby's genetic influences. |
I gained 40 pounds (started out at 110 pounds), baby was 6 pounds 14 oz.
I gained about 50 pounds and had a small baby (5 pounds, 5 oz)

i agree with 22:29. it mostly depends on your personal metabolism. i think there also may be a relationship between baby size and type of food. if you consider normal healthy pregnancies, and not those with gd or other issues.
many of my friends, and i, have had large babies, 9 1/2lbs and over. i knew my baby was big because my body showed no signs of wieght gain, it was all belly. we all ate really well, because it was our first and went a little crazy on the healthy food and protein. now that i am on my second the midwife said to really limit protein and just try to keep things simple so that this baby will be smaller. this pregnancy my weight gain is the same in total, but distributed differently. the first time i gained no wait at all the first tri due to morning sickness, this time. just remembered one other thing. the sonogram tech mentioned that all babies grow at exactly the same rate early one, which is why the due date is considered accurate with the first sonogram. the second tri sonogram is also usually only a day or two off due to growth. size and weight can start to be determined later, around 32 weeks. hope some of this helps. |
First baby - gained 45 pounds - 7 pound 4 oz baby at 40 weeks. Second baby - gained 22 pounds - 7 pound 12 oz baby at 38 weeks.
