I posted a few weeks ago that I think my kids will get about 20 presents each, and people expressed shock. There was also another thread where someone posted a list of four gifts, and people told her it was plenty.
So, I sat down and counted and I expect that my kids will get more than 20 presents each, but I'm not sure how I would reduce that if I wanted to. To be honest, that 20 includes counting things wrapped together as being the same gift, so you could argue that they're getting more than 20. For example, instead of our traditional matching pj's I'm giving each of my kids a Nationals Championship Tshirt and a pair of pj pants made of Nationals fabric. I'm counting that "outfit" as a single gift, but it could easily be two. Anyway, I'm curious when other people say their kid is only getting 4 presents (want, need, wear, read) if they're including everything, or counting differently, or if they just have small families? How does your list compare to mine. Here is what each of my kids will get At Thanksgiving when we see them -- 2 gifts A gift from Grandma A gift from one uncle In the weeks before Christmas -- 0 - 3 gifts at secret Santa exchanges at confirmation class, scouts, etc . . . My younger kid's go to gift for this is some kind of giant candy thing, like a really big Hershey bar. My oldest likes to give gift cards to things like itunes. On Christmas Eve -- 1 gift The aforementioned "pj's" On Christmas Morning -- 9 gifts From DH and me: a big gift (e.g. one is getting a bike) From "Santa" in a stocking a snack (e.g. one kid really likes a certain brand of lollipops, and he'll get 3 or 4 of them tied together with a ribbon) something to read 4 other small "stocking stuffer" type items, usually around $10 each (e.g. one of my kid really likes little stuffed animals, so his stocking will have 4 of those) From siblings 2 gifts (since I have 3 kids and they each get something for the other). At my IL's on Christmas afternoon -- 7 or more gifts A gift from grandpa A gift from great grandpa 3 gifts from DH's 3 siblings and their spouses A gift from an adult cousin A gift in the kid cousin Secret Santa exchange (probably a few extra things from great aunts or what have you who send things) A few days after Christmas -- 1 gift Tickets to an event we'll go to together as an extended family So, that's 20 - 26 gifts. Which seems absurd, but I wonder how people who think the number should be reduced, do it. |
Yes, I know I can't format! |
Don’t worry about it. |
4 from DH and I, one from their sibling, one experience gift from the grandparents. |
We have an only child with lots of adults in her life. So she gets a gazillion gifts. I don't sweat it, though we do try to purge old toys ahead of time and donate to make space. And I don't buy her toys otherwise between now and Christmas. |
I’m sorry, but I’m lazy and I can’t read your detailed message.
We do about 8-10 from Santa plus 6-7 additional from extended family (grandparents, aunts/uncles). They open those on Xmas eve. |
Do your kids only have one set of grandparents, or do they go in together? |
I was planning on 6 gifts each Christmas morning including one book from us/Santa. This does not include little stocking trinkets/treats.
One moms group gift exchange Grandma/Grandpa probably 2-3 gifts each Oma probably 2 gifts each Total 11-12 each They don’t normally get toys except on our big vacation we bought them one nice souvenir each. |
Mine get a massive amount. |
Forgot one uncle who gives one gift so 12-13 |
My kid is getting one big gift from us, a stocking from Santa, he’ll get a present from one set of grandparents and one aunt. That’s it! |
What's in the stocking? Wouldn't there be gifts in the stocking? |
+1 |
Let’s see...
From me and DH/Santa: -Stocking full of small gifts like: candy, glitter pens, hair bows, etc -3-4 books each -1 puzzle each -1 big gift each (one kid is getting a dollhouse complete w dollhouse furniture and dolls and the other is getting an easel+paint+paint brushes etc so depending on how you count that it could be 1 gift or 3-5) From extended family: -2-3 each from my parents (usually a book, a board game, and a toy each) -1 toy each from my in laws -1 or 2 toys each from their great grandma -1 gift each from their 3 uncle/aunts -usually a few other gifts from other extended family (my DH’s aunt and uncle, my aunt and uncle, etc) if we are seeing those relatives during the holidays From other: -1 book each from moms club book exchange -usually a few other small gifts from family friends, neighbors, etc this always seems to happen though it’s not the same people giving them things each year =20-30 depending on how you count/way too much |
