Kid is dual and Canadian schools are so much cheaper for us.

Are you full-pay at NYU & Michigan ?

How much is the cost difference among the 5 universities ?

Any specific desired career ?

Fluent in both English and Canadian ?

? Canadians speak.... English

W&M
IU- Kelly School of Business

Business - Major

Finance not an issue. Would try to transfer out to a better undegrad business program after first year but if likes the school, might just stay. Who knows!

Thanks in advance.

Math/Applied math
No financial considerations

My kid a few years ago had a similar list of choices for a math major. After visiting chose the SLAC (although really liked Rice but didn't want to live in Texas) and double majored in math and a social science. Got into a top 5 grad school.

+1,000

I would take Rice off my list for this reason alone, but this is an amazing list of schools!

Brown

Male. Govt/history/politics/IR-related. In-state VA. Doesn't qualify for any aid. Willing to pay if a distinct advantage over other options.

UVA.

Georgetown if money isn't an issue. Otherwise UVA.

Duke

Penn is Wharton and a little bit of engineering. No one thinks about the social science majors. And applications to Brown declined this year. Fair or not, it has a rep for rich kids floating through their self-guided curriculums while languishing in a mediocre city. Duke is more lively and varied and is generally good at everything. Plus more school spirit and better weather.

I went to Wake but even I would also say Duke.

They are both very good for business. W&M is overall the better school.

For a STEM major, Berkeley. Otherwise Duke.

Not undergrad and particularly not if you are paying OOS tuition. I'd go Duke.

IU Kelley:

Great undergrad b school reputation and ranking.
Large school (10k in b school), 40k students overall
Great big 10 sports, traditional rah rah school
Bloomington is beautiful and great is you want to be in a different geographical area than DC or want to settle in the midwest/Chicago.
Outside the b school, it is not as highly ranked.

WM:
Much higher ranked overall. Probably better known as a good school, especially in the dc area.
Smaller school (7kish overall)
Not direct admit to b school, might need to major in Econ or something similar if not accepted
Closer to dc/more likely to meet others from dc area
Cost instate is lower (out of state about the same)
Not as rah rah or sporty.

Hi! Child does not speak French if that’s what you mean. Wants to shoot for IB at least to start off career. I think his top choice is NYU for States and Western if Canada. Price difference is massive. Did get some NYU merit but I think total is about $65K. We can pay but won’t be paying for grad school in that case. If he goes to school in Canada we could do both (if he chooses that route). Kid def wants stern-hard to push London, ON over NYC. Western does recruit to Canadian banks and I know a few who have gone to the states after grad too.

WM: grade deflation? That might have an impact on the grad school admission.

You’re forgetting music where IU is superlative.

W&M does not have grade deflation. It has grade inflation pretty much like all colleges. Average GPA is now about 3.5.

Brown needs to be eliminated. The other two are better regarding world reputation and connections.
