OPK and sex question...!

Anonymous
I am charting for the first time this month and have been using OPK for the past six. I know the package says that the "best" time to conceive is when you detect your surge and to have intercourse in the next 24-48 hours. I can tell when I am going to detect my surge because of the discharge (plus, for the past 5 months I have detected it on day 14 four months and day 13 one month).

My question is this....if sperm can live in the uterus for 3-5 days potentially, should we have intercourse the day before I think the OPK will detect the surge? I just wonder if that would increase the odds. I don't know, just trying to think of anything I can here!

Thanks for any thoughts.

Yup. The more sex the better (unless you have male factor, in which case you want to just do no more than every other day). If you have good cervical mucous, it's always a good time to have sex, since the sperm can live longer in cm. Also, you want to keep the sperm fresh, so definitely start having sex before the opk turns positive. Once it turns positive, if you can have sex one or two more times in the next 36 hours, I think you've covered it.

Sperm is better quality if your DH has ejaculated or had sex 2-5 days prior, so having sex a few days before you think you are going to ovulate is helpful.

I honestly wouldn't wait for the OPK or day before the OPK and just be doing it once or twice. For us, it worked to identify the "window" (week or so around ovulation - couple days before and after) and do it every other day or every day (however much we could muster). If there is a male problem, every day is not great, but if you don't know that yet, worth a shot. You can definitely also get pregnant 1 day after, so don't just stop at the surge.

At SG, they tell you to have intercourse as soon as you see a line -- even if it is faint, which is different than the package instructions that say to wait until the line is at least as dark as or darker than the reference line. I think this advice is in line with other posters to have intercourse on the early side of your window.

Not the OP, but I am using the OPKs for the first time this month and am noticing that I am feeling ovulatory pain and the line on my OPK just turned dark. I thought that I was ovulating in the past when I felt that pain, but now I'm thinking I was wrong! Last month, we stopped having sex as soon as felt the ovulatory pain and now I'm realizing that we stopped a few days too soon... I am also using Pre-seed this month. Hoping the combination of the OPKs and the Pre-seed do the trick!

we've bee trying to conceive for the past 6 months now. this month, i used op kit. i checked online that my fertility window of O was around CD13-CD17, possible O supposed to be on the CD17. I tested with OPK on the CD16 around 3 pm, it was negative. And that night of CD16, before midnight my hubby and I had sex. Came CD17, tested at the same time around 3 pm, it was negative. Did not have sex that night but in the early morning of my CD18, around 6:30 am we had sex. At 3pm of CD18, I got positive opk, were the timing of our intercourse can get me pregnant? i do hope so. what are my chances?
