Which one is good for energetic boy that I want him to learn discipline (has problem listening to teachers & like to do things on his own at group activities), strengthen core/body (he can't do monkey bar & ride bike yet) & also learn some self-defense skill? I have googled them up, and I still don't know which one is better fit for my 5 year old. We live close to Quince Orchard high school, thanks! |
AT 5 I would do the most convenient.
I prefer Jui Jitsu (which is more like wrestling) but they are all good for strength and self control. I think Jui Jitsu is best for self defense. |
The most important choice is the instructors and program. Any of those martial arts could suit your needs. |

Agreed. Also keep in mind that Jiu Jitsu is probably the most cerebral of the 3 as well. It's a bit like playing chess; you have to be able to see 3 moves ahead, and good technique just about always beats brute strength. |
Most important is an instructor who is good with kids. Most martial arts instruction starts at 6 or 7 so you need someone who can handle an active 5 yr old and not get annoyed with him. |
As for which is "better" it is mostly about what he likes. Does he want to run and jump and kick and punch? Does he want to wrestle?
Focus on which has a good instructor for his age where it is a positive experience and then you can switch him to something else later if he prefers another style. My kids did tkd and then later switched to judo (like jui jitsu but without the joint locks - dh and I don't like joint locks for kids). |
