finicky cat

I can't figure out what/how to feed my cat. We adopted her about a year ago and in the beginning she would eat anything (aside from pate. and sea bass). Now she basically decided she only wants tuna. Which the vet said should be used sparingly. We seem to find a food she likes and enjoys, buy a case of it... and then she won't touch it with a ten-foot poll. She pretty much decided against any kind of chicken, which doesn't leave us with a lot of choices. What is a good strategy? Give her the food, if she doesn't eat it, just let her go hungry? Offer her something else? I am already a short-order cook for my kids, now I am making the same mistake with my cat, lol! Not to mention that I spend entirely too much time thinking/ researching cat food!

Anyone?

An otherwise healthy animal offered adequate amounts of species appropriate food will not allow itself to starve to death. You can either wait her out, or rotate foods, whichever causes you less stress.

I'd just give her the tuna.

Mix tuna with the food you want her to eat. Over time, mix in less and less tuna. Tuna is apparently cat crack and they prefer it to anything else. People tuna isn't nutritionally complete for cats.

This seems obvious so I'm guessing the answer is no. Will she eat tuna cat food? If not, I'd go with PP's strategy where you mix in and then wean off.

Is your cat overweight?

When my dog started refusing food, it was because he was overweight and we were unwittingly overfeeding him. The breeder told us that we should feel his upper ribs (he's a fluffy breed and we can't just eyeball it).

With cats texture matters. Also not the same flavor every day. Buy a multi-texture pack like Friskies. I have multiple cats and they all like the shreds and the filets.

Tikki cat is our cats favorite

Are we talking about cat food or fresh fish? I would check her teeth or something that might be wrong. The only time any of my cats would not eat was when they were sick. My present cat, adores those half packs of cat food, Cesar or something?

I think the cat one is Sheba.

Mine hates the shreds, it's pate or nothing. She's 21 and got very thin this summer. She also will not eat high-end food, since I settled for Friskies pate, period she has begun putting on a bit of weight, her bones had become frighteningly sharp.

OP, I have heard that you should stick with the same food or cats will get pickier, but I don't know if that has been tested. On the bright side, maybe your feline will rotate back to a food it has previously eaten and then rejected.

If all you have is chicken flavored cat food then give her that. She'll eat it if she's hungry enough.

+1 on the Sheba “Perfect Portions” in gravy. My finicky cat loves these.

Also, Fancy Feast is like crack for cats. Early in my cat ownership years I SWORE I’d never give my cats “crap” food like Fancy Feast (or evening Sheba) but after trying about 47 other foods that went uneaten here we are.

Yes, totally right, you are! I just fed her and saw that I wrote the wrong name here!
