Our puppy is 6 months old. He was a away at training for a couple weeks, they fed him once a day at dinner time. Now that he is home, he seems hungry all the time, I went back to twice a day- he’s still a puppy ...
I would like to move him to once a day. When did you make this change or do you just feed them twice a day? |
| Twice a day. I’ve never fed a dog once a day. I don’t think it’s particularly kind to them to do that. |
| Also, puppies really need to eat. This isn’t the time to limit food. |
Or healthy. |
| our dog never went to less than twice a day |
| I’ve never fed any dog once a day. Did they give a reason? |

Gosh, that would lot of food for my dog to wolf down all at once! Our dog is almost 3 and he eats twice a day. The dog I had growing up also ate twice a day for his whole life.
I guess if you have a dog who grazes and eats gradually, feeding once a day might work well. But our dogs always act like they haven't seen food in the last 19 days and wolf it down like they need to catch a bus, so I don't have much actual experience with that. |
| Our large, active dog is 9 and has always eaten twice a day. As a young puppy, I think we did 3x/day. |
| Let’s give OP a meal once a day. Some people shouldn’t have dogs. |
| I’ve always fed my dogs twice a day. They eat breakfast and dinner. |
| I'm surprised by these answers. I've had dogs my whole life and their bowl is always full. They eat when they're hungry and stop when full. None were fat either. Is that not an option? I think dogs would overeat if they only saw food once a day and it isn't healthy to eat so much at once. |

Don't go back to that training center. Puppies need to eat 3 times a day, and adult dogs need to eat twice a day. In the wild, apex predators eat what they catch, and sometimes go for days without eating, but this contributes to their shortened lives. Wolf parents do their best to feed their puppies every day. Dogs have been domesticated for centuries and should be fed more often to keep them in good health. |
| We have always fed twice a day. I adopted both my dogs as adults. Free feeding does not work well for them. |
| Breeder/Trainer. And, of course pup owner. Dogs should be fed twice a day. More often for puppies, dependent on age and weight gain. At six months, most puppies are ready for twice a day feeds. |
You’ve clearly not had labs LOL. Free feeding is not an option unless you want a fat one. I’m convinced I have some lab in me. |
