Food, Cooking, and Restaurants
I may not be using sufficient/appropriate descriptors, so apologies in advance. I spent part of my childhood in a NY suburb with a large reform Jewish population and would like to try and cook the kinds of foods I enjoyed as a child: kugels, latkes, matzoh ball soup, kasha, homemade pickled vegetables, ruggelach, etc. Vegetarian oriented dishes especially! Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
For traditional food, the New York Times Jewish Cookbook is good. But for kosher recipes in general, the Kosher by Design series and Kosher Pallate are both excellent.
I'm Jewish, love to cook and have a huge cookbook collection. I think for what you want, find yourself a cookbook from a synagogue sisterhood or a Hadassah group -- they have good home cooking, every day recipes that are simple, easy to follow and taste familiar. I like Faye Levy, Marcy Goldman and Mollie Katzen for their cookbooks.
Love and Knishes is the classic in this genre.
