DS (5) woke up early this morning and threw up, mostly saliva it seems like. An hour later he was begging for food. The recommendations all say to wait 8 hours, but if the kid is hungry and asks for food, it's okay to give it right? |
Give him small amounts of bland things. BRAT is a good guide -- bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. You can also do dry cheerios or plain pasta if he keeps down applesauce or jelly toast. Also water!

When it’s mostly saliva I feed again when he is hungry - some kids just have a sensitive gag reflex and just cough up saliva when they get coughing hard. I don’t treat it like true vomiting.
Plus, in my experience, appetite is a good indicator he is ready for food. But stay away from anything that will stain the carpet just in case! |
Steer clear of dairy for now, until you're sure that he's over whatever set off the vomiting.
+100 to BRAT. |
My DS throws up post nasal drip, it is nasty. But we have learned to differentiate between vomit food and vomit post nasal drip. Post nasal drip we will give him something to eat if he says he is hungry, but aim for saltines, bananas, toast and the like initially. If he is hungry a few hours later and has not been sick again, we will allow a more normal meal.
If DS throws up food then we follow BRAT for 24 hours. Honestly, he rarely asks for food for a while after he has thrown up. We try and push the liquids and chicken broth with saltines. |
This. And I tell them to chew well & take small bites so its easier on their tummy. Same thing with liquids, small sips only. If they want food give it. These foods mentioned by pp are ok if they come back up... others not so much. |
Just go slow and bland at first. You will know if the food is making your kid feel sick because they'll take one bite and stop eating.
As the day goes on, you can probably add in more things like soup. I agree on avoiding dairy for a bit. |
We usually wait more like 8 hours, but 4 of us have been sick this week with something that caused one or two rounds of vomiting and then we were all able to eat at least water and cracker within a couple hours. I’d start him off with a few sips of water every fifteen minutes for an hour and if he keeps that down, try maybe a couple saltines. |
I'd just give dry cheerios, toast with jam, stuff like that. |
It's been 6 hours since he puked.
So far I've done toast, banana, apple sauce, broth and crackers. Everything is staying down so far. This has never come up in the past since he normally pukes in the middle of the night and then sleeps several hours! Thanks for the advice. |
I usually start with a cracker or bread, see how that goes, and then build up to regular food. |
Who says to wait 8 hours?! That's a really long time. I wait at least an hour, and then give small bites of bland things. No liquid on an empty stomach. |
Waiting 8 hours is ridiculous |
It's prime time for post nasal drip, and the morning gagging and coughing that comes along with it. |
We had this exact same virus (3 of the 5 of us + MIL + turns out we gave it to DS' friend). Appears to have originated at DS' preschool. You don't live on the Hill, do you? |
