Joe Fox from You’ve Got Mail is the best romantic hero

At some point I sort of wrote this movie off because I didn’t like how the rich guy crushed the woman professionally and then she falls in love with him anyway. But in watching it again, he is a genuine romantic hero. He doesn’t set out to pursue her until he finds out that she is ShopGirl. Then he wins her by genuinely empathizing. He gives her space and time. He watches her devastation, listens to her, and doesn’t try to “rescue” her or “make it better.” He truly sees her point of view and accepts it.

Then, as himself, he builds a genuine friendship and romance before he reveals himself as also being online guy. So she has the option to forgive him, or not, but she knows he’s been both people the whole time.

Tom. Hanks. I am in favor of it. Also being in a New York where no one runs out of money would be okay.

No not a romantic hero at all. Manipulated and lied to her. Raise your standards, op.

I think it works in large part because it's Tom Hanks, who is inherently nice and likable.

I don't care whether he's actually a good romantic hero or not. I am going to love that movie forever!

Isn't it Foxx?

Truly one of the dumbest movies ever (and that’s saying a lot since I’ve seen Satisfaction and Fresh Horses).

Plus: Meg Ryan is completely shrill and unloveable in that movie.

I've loved that movie since always.

Nope. It gives me solace to know that his brick and mortar bookstore probably got crushed when Amazon came along.

I've mentioned this before on DCUM, but how would that relationship ever progress? Years later, you know they'd be in bed and some version of the following would take place:

Kathleen: Hey, remember when you put me out of business? That sure sucked.

Joe: When will you stop crucifying me with that!?

Thanks to this board, I re-watched that movie a couple weeks ago when we had that rainy Sunday morning. Perfect movie for a rainy day - all cozy on my couch watching a cozy movie. I'm going to love it too.

I disagree.

I think Meg’s character was so completely awful that she likely would have embraced the money, become a lady of leisure, and forced Hanks to publish her subpar kids’ books. He would definitely find a younger more pleasant girlfriend within a handful of years.

Based on what? His track record with Parker Posey's character?

Based on his shrew of a wife (who I’m sure would self-medicate with wine and pills) coupled with the fact his father cheated and had kids with a younger subsequent wife.
