Walking to/from in evenings/night (darkness) with kids

If you run errands in the evenings and are outside at dusk/dark. What safety rules do you have for your family?

Hold hands and reflective vests on kids.

We hold hands the crossing street and they must walk on the inside.

As a driver, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put a reflective vest on your child (and yourself!) They are SO CHEAP on amazon and really do help!

And if you are a driver, and not often a pedestrian, PLEASE keep a vest in your car and put it on if you need to exit your car at the side of the road at night!

I'll go one better: battery-operated LED lights are super-cheap and even better than a vest. Get one--wristband, ankle band, anything. Also please light up your dogs and bikes!

We wear glow bracelets when we are out walking the dog, going for a post dinner walk, etc.

That’s crazy. I get the need for the glow stuff, but who thinks that far ahead when you’re going to go run an errand real quick? Maybe if we were on the bike. No one should be driving on the sidewalks.

You just leave it in your trunk, goofball.

I put extra reflective tape in my kids coats. Last year I bought bright colors like orang and red, but those are no better that the navy blue they prefer.

When we walk around the block after dinner, the kids wear headlamps and adults carry flashlights. We look dorky, but the kids think it’s fun.

I'm hoping you don't mean the disposable ones. Why not use a reusable reflector or flashing light?

I don't believe any of you. I have NEVER seen a kid in a reflective vest at night ever.

I was thinking the same thing. I have seen a reflective vest on a kid riding in their parent's bike at night. That's it. Ever.
