Is it a pipe dream for an inexperienced diver to compete in HS?
“Athletic swimmer” build but not a swimmer or even n a gymnast. But loves our trampoline

I don't think so. I have a swimmer at a MoCo HS and the quality of the diving (especially boys) is not so great at many of the meets. Ask swimmers on your HS team how deep the bench is on the dive team.
At our large public high school, there's usually one or two experience divers. A few girls with gymnastics backgrounds take it up. Many kids try it for the very first time in high school. Go for it!

My HS kid is going to try it this spring. She's an avid basketball player and wants to do something different.
Funny, when she was little, the big thing was she would freak out if she ever went upside down...just remembering this now. Well, this will be an interesting spring. |
Really depends on the school, but most schools are lacking depth. If you are reasonably athletic and not afraid, you can learn enough dives to compete, especially boys. As pp said, you get more girls coming in with som gymnastics experience, but the boys usually have more of a chance. If really interested, take a dive class so you can learn technique and perform the minimum number of dives.
At our FCPS, divers are definitely needed and some start in high school. Often even the lowest scoring divers earn points for their team because there are so few divers competing.
