Whole Milk and Dulles Airport Screening

Anonymous
OK, I've read the TSA rules on traveling with fluids for young children, and it seems to indicate that while Breast Milk and Juice are acceptable, Whole Milk is not - I get the Breast Milk/Formula thing, but why an exception for juice and not milk (seems to me it's easier to buy juice in the airport than Whole Milk)? Anyone have any experience trying to take Whole Milk through security at Dulles? (I have an evening flight - would love to be able to give DS his normal milk before bedtime in hopes that he'll sleep)

I flew over Thanksgiving out of National with a full sippy cup of whole milk in my diaper bag. We went through the family security line with no problems. They didn't even open my bag to look at the milk. Had the same experience at Orlando on the way back.

They sell milk at the airport. It might not be whole milk, but I'm sure your child could have lowfat milk for one day.

Starbucks sells whole milk. Avoid the hassle, just buy it there on your way to the gate.

We've taken through security boxes of shelf stable milk, boxes of juice, and sippy cups filled with milk probably a dozen times and never had a problem. I do try to pull them out and put in the bin separately, but the few times I've forgotten it was never an issue.

We've flown three times w/ bottles or sippy cups of milk from Dulles and had no problem. One time they had me open the bottle and they had a little test strip they held over the milk (didn't touch it). That was it. The worse they can do is have you dump the milk, but I doubt they will.

The reason why TSA's guidance does not make sense is they do not have moms involved in making the policies. That is until there is an issue and then they adjust for that unique request (eg: pumps / breast milk) and then they see that they forgot something else from the policy - such as formula and they throw that in etc etc.

I haven't been to Dulles but at BWI they did not blink an eye over my son's sippy cup filled with Lactaid whole milk or the ice pack. I just let the TSA agent know and pulled them out of his lunch bag. If they had confiscated it, I would have bought more milk at Starbucks.
