Best Path in MCPS for Talented Creative Writer?

Anonymous
Our DD loves to write. Are there any programs or specific classes to be aware of at the high school level - she is in middle school now? We will check out the MCPS website, but was hoping someone here might have some inside info on the best path for emerging writers. She knows about the CAP program, but is looking for a more creative approach.

Is cap not creative? That was my impression but I was hoping it was wrong.

Nope, waste of money. CAP run circles around the privates. (See C-span awards for proof )

I don’t think there’s a specific creative writing program, but I would think all writing styles have a creative element. CAP is not mostly focused on fiction writing, but there is a lot of writing including cultural/media criticism, journalism, lots of essays and creative projects. When I was at Blair there was a one semester creative writing elective. I took it senior year. I don’t know if you took it earlier if you could continue with additional semesters.

You kid will not improve in the area of creative writing in a regular English class. The guides are simply not set up in that manner, as much of the emphasis is on preparing students to meet CC standards on assessments.

I would look into creative writing sessions at the local libraries. I signed my daughter up, and she attended once a week. free!

The instructors were published writers.

Entering competitions like Scholastic Key or attending Kenyon or University of Iowa summer workshops can help.
