I have a fourth and second grader and we will be moving to the area in the Spring (not ideal). I would like to send them to public school but DH does not want to unless they qualify for AAP. Can I get them tested before entry somewhere? What is the cost? Will Fairfax use those scores for placement? Any advice is appreciated. |
| I believe that Fairfax county will accept testing (as long as they’re the correct ones) from other school systems, as well as private psychologists. The cost depends on the test and the tester, but I think you can expect to spend around $500 per test. |
While this is true, the cycle ONLY starts after your child enters FCPS for Level IV services. You can apply for immediate placement into Level II or III, but not Level IV. Your child will be enrolled into GenEd/Level II (FCPS teachers to Level II curriculum in most good schools) or get placement for Level III services in certain subjects, and then you will start the process for a Fall semester application into Level IV. If your child will be entering 2nd grade in the Fall 2020 semester, you wouldn't be missing much. Level IV starts in 3rd grade County wide. https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/students-new-fcps |
Not true that link specifically provides information as to what to do for immediate consideration for Level IV. If the student is coming from private school or planning on going to private school, might be able to submit the AAP consideration as described by https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/privatehome-schooled-students where all the documents are due by Nov 5th. However, unless student has prior record of CogAT or NNAT from previous school district, only option is to get testing done by private psychologist to have a document ready in two weeks. |
I mean not true as far as only Level II and Level III, but yes unless student comes from private or home school, they have to be registered first |
How much are you budgeting for house and private school? |
Considering DK will be moved to FCPS in the Spring, there are few options. 1. submit for AAP packet for private and home school by Nov 4th and 5th for the Spring semster. However, this will mean you don't have time to get the testing done through GMU so would have to get it done through private psychologist (fees tends to be higher). 2. prepare the AAP packet for private and home school and submit it by Jan 30,31st for Fall semester, DK would either need to be sent to private school or home school until Fall. 3. register the DK to FCPS when they get here and send them to local school and ask for immediate placement consideration for AAP LIV. However, considering your DH would only send the kids if they are accepted to DH, I guess this option is out of question. Private schools in these areas does have fairly good balanced system, but education wise they do lack slightly compared to the AAP (well atleast what I was told by local TJ prep school people that those who excelled at private school and attend the TJ prep at their institution struggles to keep up with kids in AAP). |
This is true only in math. AAP math tends to be head and shoulders above private schools in the area. |
