A middle school teacher committed crimes against a child and then tried to flee the country on Friday, Fairfax County police say.

Matthew Snell, 31, was arrested Friday at El Paso International Airport after learning that county police were investigating him, police said.

I think it means that it seems to be pretty easy for these guys to get away with it for way too long. People, especially people in schools, just can't really believe one of their colleagues would do such a thing!

Roughly, the prevalence of pedophilia is estimated to be 3-5% in the general population. There are 12,000 teachers in Fairfax county. I don't have a good handle on how teachers compare to the general population, but a low estimate using these numbers is 360.

According to the press release from the Fairfax County police department, Snell lived in Maryland. His Facebook page also identifies him as living in Clinton, Maryland.

Another reason why it's better when Maryland residents stay on their side of the Potomac.
