Since most of you aren't in TX, and in DC or NYC or Boston.. what is your opinion of the TX schools.. which ones do you consider at the top?
UT-Austin has an excellent reputation in TX and parents go to great lengths to ensure their kids are in the top 8 percent in state to get accepted, but I don't necessarily think the name means as much in a major city on the coast. |
| UT Austin, Rice, SMU (not awesome school lots of spoiled kids, but is small and that is great for some) |
| Ut Austin is great. I hear nice things about Trinity in San Antonio (pricey though). |

I'm from Texas. UT Austin is the state flagship school. I'd say it has a strong reputation like most state flagships. Texas A&M is extremely respected for it's academics (although fondly mocked statewide with Aggie jokes), but may have narrower offerings.
While not state schools, Rice and Trinity are also well respected. I think Rice is especially strong in STEM fields and has recently changed their tuition fees so that students whose family income is < 130K get free tuition and those < 200 K pay half. |
| ^Oops, I just realized you were asking for an out-of-state perspective and I gave you an in-state one (even though I'm currently OOS). Sorry I didn't read closer. |
You are from TX. I forgive you. |

Rice for private
UT Austin for public Texas A&M for some STEM SMU if that’s your thing Trinity for SLAC |
| One thing to look at is if the school requires kids to come during the summer for orientation/registration and how often. I think TAMU does? Kind of challenging if you have to take multiple trips there that you weren't expecting. |
