Cars like Subaru Impreza. - small, awd, lane assist and auto breaking safety features

Anonymous
We are looking at a car for a new driver. We really like the features and size of the subaru impreza including the Eyesight safety system with lane assist and automatic breaking. Do any other small cars/ suvs have similar features and have a good awd system?

Why not just get a Subaru? It has everything you are looking for.

Subaru is the way to go if you can afford it. They are safe, ie not likely to break down on side of highway or back roads. Last long and drive nice.

Yes, a Crosstrek (AKA a raised Impreza)
Or maybe a Mazda 3

"Braking." Cars have brakes. If something "breaks" it's very undesirable, especially if it's the brakes.

I ended up picking Nissan Rogue Sport over Impreza. During test drive, try (with dealer's permission etc) accelerate to 70 mph on a mostly empty highway. Then break as hard as you can to a nearly complete stop, as if you were in an emergency situation. I found that Nissan Rogue Sport handles superiorly under such conditions. It also parallel parks better. Safety features you seek come standard on a base model except lane assist. I ended up leasing the car and have been ridiculously happy with it my first year of driving to date.

I love my almost 5 year old Impreza - but SO glad I purchased before they added all the annoying safety mechanisms. I think people rely on them too much, and not utilize real driving skills. Mine has none of that stuff... but I love it.

Crosstrek has a better safety profile than Impreza. The insurance premiums were half the cost.

I kind of feel the same. I have a 2004 subaru that drives really well; no bells and whistles. I test drove a new subaru with all the bells and whistles, and I just don't like having to rely on them so much. I think they are great features, but, I don't like to rely on them so much.

I turn the more annoying ones off and leave the emergency braking on

Are you daft? Do not do this unless on a closed road/course.

I doubt this is correct. The Impreza and Crosstrek are the essentially the same vehicle built on the exact same platform with the Crosstrek on slightly raised suspension. Both are IIHS Top Safety Picks and have virtually identical safety ratings by IIHS. If anything, the Impreza is likely slightly safer because it has a lower center of gravity / marginally less susceptible to rollovers.

I'm sure the premiums on the WRX are high, but not the regular Impreza.
